Over 80 mature, decades-old trees were marked for the axe to make way for a major road-widening project. While many believed the loss of the green cover was an inevitable price of urban progress, a passionate collective of local residents and a pioneering horticulture team from Chennai refused to let the remaining giants fall.
In May 2017, the Sarjapur Residents’ Welfare Association (SRWA) made history by launching India’s first large-scale, crowd-funded tree translocation initiative, raising nearly ₹3 lakhs rupees.

Enter professional horticulturalist **ilango Subramaniyan** and his specialized team from **Jeyam Landscape**.

# # # The Precision of Root-Bowling
Moving a mature tree is not a simple lift-and-shift job; it is a complex surgical procedure. The team worked tirelessly, often deep into the night to minimize traffic disruptions, to prepare three massive Peepal trees (and a delicate Neem tree) for their journey.
Using a meticulous combination of traditional Indian methodology and scientific preservation, the team executed the critical **root-bowling process**.

* **Moisture Retention:** The roots were carefully trimmed in a precise circular shape to stimulate future regrowth, wrapped securely in biodegradable gunny bags, and bound tightly to trap essential root enzymes.

* **The Journey:** Massive cranes and semi-trailer trucks carefully lifted the multi-ton giants, successfully relocating three of them to their new home on the nearby campus of Inventure Academy.

# # # A 9-Year Success Story
While critics often point out that tree transplantations have low survival rates .

Today, **nine years later, all three Peepal trees have completely adapted to their new ground, standing fully survived, lush, and growing beautifully.** What once faced certain death as highway debris is now providing a thriving green canopy, shade, and a living ecosystem for hundreds of school students.
