Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun has its roots in the erstwhile Imperial Forest Research Institute established in 1906 to organize and lead forestry research in the country. Initially named as Imperial Forest Research Institute, FRI came into being in 1906. Later renamed as Forest Research Institute and Colleges, with a number of centres located at different places all over the country ad

ministering research as well as training of Forest Officers and Forest Rangers. After reorganization of Forestry Research in the country and creation of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) in 1988, the training and research centres were given an independent status of institutes. Forest Research Institute, now one of the institutes under ICFRE, was conferred the status of Deemed University in December 1991 on the recommendations of the UGC, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Dehradun is truly wonderful place to be associated with. It has friendly and helpful people, an abundance of recreational opportunities and places to see and visit. The open countryside, hills and mountains of Dehradun has a reputation being the educational capital of the country. Dehradun has a sub-tropical climate with cool winters, warm and crisp springs, hot summers and a strong monsoon. With over 200 years of history, Dehradun's proudest moment came in Novembers 2000, when the town become the capital of Uttarakhand, understandably termed as Dev Bhoomi (abode of the Gods). The city is 240 Kms away from New Delhi and is well connected by road, rail and air. The University is located in FRI campus on Kaulagarh road in Dehradun. HOW TO REACH
By Road: Dehradun is well connected with road to all parts of the country and can easily be travelled by bus or taxi from New Delhi, Sahranpur, Lucknow, Roorkee etc. By Train: Dehradun is a major railway station of Northern Railways and is well connected with direct trains to almost all the big cities of India. Some of the major ones are Delhi-Dehradun shatabdi AC special, Mussoorie Express, Jan Shatabdi, Dehradun Express, Howrah-Dehradun Express, Chennai-Dehradun Express, Bandra-Dehradun Express, Indore-Dehradun Express etc. By Air: The Jolly Grant Airport, 35 km from Dehradun, is well connected with the Delhi airport.

The Short-Term Training Programme on “Seasoning and Preservation of Wood & Bamboo” was successfully conducted from 18th May to 22nd May 2026 by the Wood Seasoning Discipline, and Wood Preservation Discipline, Forest Products Division, Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun. The programme was designed to strengthen scientific understanding and practical skills related to seasoning and preservation technologies for wood and bamboo, with participation from industry, academia, and organizations from different parts of the country including Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The programme covered important theoretical aspects including wood and bamboo properties, moisture movement, equilibrium moisture content, seasoning schedules, preservation principles, kiln drying technologies, plywood production, wood finishing, and recent technological developments in wood science. Participants were also provided exposure to institutional facilities through visits to laboratories, museums, botanical garden, and technology demonstration units.

On 22 May, the Extension Division celebrated the day under the theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact” by organizing a Bird Watching Programme at the institute campus. 🐦

The event highlighted the vital role of birds in biodiversity conservation, with insightful addresses by Shri D. P. Khali and expert guidance from Dr. Arun Pratap Singh. A fun and engaging quiz competition added to the enthusiasm of participants.

With over 60 participants, including scientists, staff, and students, the programme was successfully conducted under the leadership of Dr. Charan Singh and the dedicated efforts of the Extension Division team.

Forest Research Institute celebrated National Technology Day on 11th May 2026 with great enthusiasm. The exhibition aimed to disseminate scientific and technical knowledge through posters, models, and display materials. All Heads of Divisions, scientists, and officers of the Institute participated and presented their recent scientific achievements and technological advancements.
The exhibition was inaugurated at 10:30 AM by Smt. Richa Misra, IFS, Director In-charge, FRI. She visited the exhibition, interacted with scientists, and appreciated the innovative research and technologies developed by various divisions. She encouraged scientists and officers to continue their efforts in effectively disseminating research outcomes for the benefit of society. The major highlights of the exhibition included thermo-hygro-mechanically modified wood, hydrophobic wood of superior quality, and advanced wood finishes mimicking materials such as tiles, stone, and metal. Other exhibits featured molecular and biotechnological interventions aimed at enhancing disease tolerance and adaptability of elite tree genotypes under diverse agroclimatic conditions. Innovative hydroponic and aeroponic techniques for bamboo propagation, improved germplasm, and other advanced forestry technologies were also showcased. Forest protection division presented three novel fungal species new to science—Calonectria populi, Calonectria caudovesiculata, and Trichoderma frianum. In addition, various techniques and methodological approaches for assessing industrial pollution were exhibited. Informational materials such as pamphlets, brochures, leaflets, and booklets highlighting research outputs and technologies developed by different divisions were also displayed. All the museums of the Institute were opened without any entry fee on the National Technology Day.

ई.आई.ए.सी.पी आर.पी, एफ.आर.आई देहरादून द्वारा मातृ दिवस के उपलक्ष्य में 08 मई 2026 को फूल चंद नारी शिल्प इंटर कॉलेज में “माँ के लिए पत्ती कला – माताओं को एक पर्यावरण-अनुकूल रचनात्मक श्रद्धांजलि” कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया गया। कार्यक्रम के दौरान विद्यार्थियों ने अपनी माताओं को समर्पित पर्यावरण-अनुकूल पत्ती कला (लीफ आर्ट) तैयार की, जिससे रचनात्मकता एवं पर्यावरण जागरूकता को बढ़ावा मिला। कार्यक्रम में विद्यार्थियों एवं शिक्षकों ने उत्साहपूर्वक सहभागिता की।

ई.आई.ए.सी.पी आर.पी, एफ.आर.आई देहरादून ने 4 मई 2026 को देहरादून शहर में “ध्वनि प्रदूषण जागरूकता अभियान” आयोजित किया। इस अभियान के तहत स्कूलों, अस्पतालों, सार्वजनिक पार्कों और प्रमुख ट्रैफिक सिग्नलों के पार्किंग क्षेत्रों को लक्षित करते हुए अनावश्यक हॉर्न बजाने से बचने और जिम्मेदार व्यवहार को बढ़ावा देने पर जोर दिया गया। अभियान के दौरान जागरूकता पोस्टर चिपकाए और लगाए गए। यह अभियान घंटाघर, गढ़ी कैंट, डालनवाला, गांधी पार्क, ऐशले हॉल चौक और दून अस्पताल चौक सहित विभिन्न स्थानों पर संचालित किया गया।

ई.आई.ए.सी.पी आर.पी, एफ.आर.आई, देहरादून द्वारा “पृथ्वी दिवस 2026” का आयोजन “Our Power, Our Planet” थीम के अंतर्गत 22 अप्रैल 2026 को तुलाज़ इंस्टीट्यूट, देहरादून में “Applied Energy Intelligence Challenge 2026” के माध्यम से किया गया। इस कार्यक्रम में इंजीनियरिंग पाठ्यक्रमों के छात्र एवं संकाय सदस्यों ने भाग लिया तथा ऊर्जा एवं स्थिरता से संबंधित विषयों पर विश्लेषणात्मक समस्या-समाधान गतिविधियों में सक्रिय रूप से सहभागिता की। कार्यक्रम के दौरान मिशन लाइफ पर एक प्रस्तुति दी गई तथा सूचना पटों पर इन्फोग्राफिक पोस्टरों का प्रदर्शन भी किया गया। अंत में कार्यक्रम का समापन संकाय सदस्यों एवं विजेताओं के सम्मान के साथ किया गया।

Students from engineering courses and faculty participated, engaging in analytical problem-solving on energy and sustainability issues. A presentation on Mission LiFE was delivered, and infographic posters were also displayed on notice boards. The event concluded with the felicitation of faculty and winners.
