Today is Vishwakarma Puja, and we celebrated it at our Lucknow site with a havan and a bhandara for our team.
Lord Vishwakarma, also known as the Devashilpi, is the divine architect and craftsman. The old texts describe him as the one who built the cities in those stories and made the tools the gods used. He is not remembered for any single building. He is honoured as the god of craft itself β of design, of measurement, and of the tools a thing is made with. The day comes every year in mid-September, and is kept across northern and eastern India in workshops, factories, foundries and on sites like ours.
It is an important day for us for a simple reason. Most things today are built in a factory somewhere else and brought to where they are needed. A building is not. Every column, every slab and every wall on our sites is made right where it stands β by people, with tools in their hands, to a measurement that has to be correct the first time. That is the craft this day honours. It is also the work our teams do every morning.
So we hold the puja at the site, not at the office. The day belongs to the people who are on the site β the mason, the carpenter, the bar-bender, the fitter, the operator, the helper. A building is imagined as the work of drawings and engineers. It is really the work of several hundred pairs of hands, and most of them are never named anywhere.
After the havan, everyone on the project sat and ate together.
