Our studio paused to listen. Drawings were read, Silences were noticed, and Intentions were questioned.

Encounters like these remind us that architecture evolves through dialogue. Grateful for the time, generosity, and sharp observations shared with us.

The entrance compound wall became an exercise in working within limitations rather than against them. What seemed restrictive at first turned into a catalyst for multiple design possibilities while carrying the design language of the house , exploring proportions, solids and voids, material language, and threshold experiences.

When certain moves are off the table, design thinking sharpens. Each option emerged as a thoughtful response, balancing belief, function, and architectural intent. The result was not a single solution, but a series of explorations each redefining how an entrance can express restraint, clarity, and quiet character which binds well with the House.

Vanam : Nandu’s Home

What makes the house different from the other conventional homes is the idea of the hand. Each hand touches every corner of the built form, there is an exchange between the body and the head material. Unique to itself, one can witness a sheer sense of force within and around the house, a feeling of moving weight, where the movement of the user is guided through an orchestrated composition of materials as they marry their surroundings effortlessly.

A more directional experience is framed when two natural materials come close, reluctant to collide yet deciding to amalgamate with a brother substance. The home plays an act of being a host, accommodating the heavy craftsmanship of local materials.

Vanam : Nandu’s Home

Initial sketches for a family residence in a shared commune. The drawings reflect a detailed investigation driven by hand gestures, the relevance of which will be revealed as the project unfolds. As outlined in the brief, the home was envisioned as an extension of the exterior built landscape, a significant part of the spatial strategy derives meaning from outdoor areas that seamlessly flow through the interior.

The site configuration is elongated, offering greater depth in shared spatial zones in relation to the neighbouring plots. This condition led to scripting the house as a gradual experience. Beginning with crafted entrance, followed by a swirled driveway and landscape that gently encroach, allowing a relationship to form between the inhabitant and the architecture.

The programme was conceived with social gatherings and festivals as integral components of everyday life. Organised around a central courtyard, the residence remains outwardly flexible with its two wings connected by a continuous spinal bridge along the external verandah which on parallel divides the side yards of the house.

The landscape was scripted to evolve organically, merging effortlessly with the existing flora, allowing both the home and its surroundings to feel naturally grown and contextually relevant.

Vertical housing has always been a question of social inclusivity. The modular approach in a housing complex ensures equity in spatial planning; however, social zoning becomes discontented as the ground levels are inaccessible to residents at higher levels. As a consequence, the modularity allows us to twirl the building’s footprint around, giving rise to horizontal terraces that match the size of the unit, this also allows porosity within the building, giving shaded decks for the residents. The result is more spatial formations within the programme and a layout that generates the idea of ‘ground’ at higher elevations.

As the mammoth mass sits on the land and further when we sculpt the land layer by layer pushing each column of programme in a bridged composition, while keeping the alternating floors connected as response to the surroundings. The footprint demands for splitting horizontally, the building’s density is dissipated by dissecting it to accommodate the harsh winds from the southern cone. As the visual length cuts through the building, we allow eastem light to pe*****te from the opposite direction, ensuring that light resches the deeper shells of the built for. This allows the building to settle as a single boat.

Conceived as a mid segment housing dwelling, the programme encourages residents into accidental encounters. The journey from the entrance of the society hints at and reminisces what the land once carried “the anecdotes of casual Goan culture”. With each unit rising, a layer of the past is encountered, and these unspoken, hidden social spaces act as extended prosthetics of the emotional side of housing that bind the dwelling together.

Horizontally, the building’s density is dissected to accommodate the harsh winds from the southern cone. As the visual length cuts through the building, eastern light pe*****te from the opposite direction, ensuring that light reaches deeper shells of the built form. This allows the building to be perceived as a single boat.

The design development process reveals the land naked. As we progress deeper into the potential of the physical programme, we sculpt through layers of land that host both itself and the programme. The intent was to ensure that the built mass and the terrain share a mutual agreement, exploiting usage to every nervic end of the land.

The process resulted propose a modular approach to the programme that is malleable beyond its exoskeleton. Being situated with a terrain, it would be redundant and contradictory for the resident to not share space with nature in its physical presence. Hence, an orchestrated green space within shared units elevates the idea of social space at sky level.

Work in Progress - Banyan Terrace , Hosuing Development

A topography that adapts to the built or a built form that adapts to a varied topography.
The land falls nearly 60 metres from one end to the other. Natural, whale sized laterite chunks have, for ages, held together a densely forested terrain. Water finds its own course across the land, travelling toward the tail of the site where it finally merges with a stream.

Within this landscape, the programme demands a mammoth density heavy in both weight and movement. The built form therefore manipulates itself to flow with the terrain, allowing land and built to exist not as separate entities, but as parts of one another.

Location : Vanam, Moinabad, Telangana
Context : The site sits on the edge of the town, where the shelter transitions into the built. The image depicts a traditional grey space ....... a no man’s land which is crafted with layered tones and materials drawn from surrounding past. A solid mass rests above, supported by stone columns hand crafted by artisans.

On the floor, the continuous grouting forms a maze like pattern, resembling lines sketched on paper and creating a visible rhythm of movement. Walking along these paths becomes an act of tracing the geometry itself.
At the intersection a void in the programmes emerges a distinct zone understood as a spatial pause that functions as a third space within the residence, linking the habitant to its surrounding context.
