Designed by Principal Designer Chirag U Swain of Chirag Design Studio, the private spaces of this residence explore neoclassical luxury through individual colour palettes, distinctive finishes and carefully considered details. The bedrooms feature upholstered headboards, layered curtains and elegant bedside lighting, with warm neutrals creating a restful backdrop. Burgundy accents and thoughtfully selected furnishings introduce richness, giving each room its own personality.

The bathrooms bring refinement through marble-look surfaces, framed mirrors, elegant vanity designs and warm metallic fittings. In contrast, the kitchen takes a more contemporary direction with muted green cabinetry, understated countertops and clean-lined detailing. These material and colour choices establish distinct identities for the different spaces while maintaining a cohesive design throughout the home.

The result is a residence where classical elegance adapts naturally to modern family life. Rather than relying solely on traditional ornamentation, the interiors express luxury through a thoughtful combination of comfort, functionality and individual character, creating spaces that feel timeless yet distinctly contemporary.

Reimagining an existing structure into a timeless home, this renovation transforms an existing G+1 residence into a G+2 home, retaining the original structure while introducing an additional floor to accommodate the family’s evolving needs and aspirations. With a total built-up area of approximately 7,500 sq. ft. across the G+2 floors, the residence embraces a neoclassical design style that balances classical elegance with contemporary living.

Led by Principal Designer Chirag U Swain at Chirag Design Studio, the design direction emerged from the family’s desire for a neoclassical home, inspired by a previous project by the studio. The vision was to create interiors that feel elegant and enduring, drawing from classical proportions, refined wall mouldings, decorative detailing and statement lighting. Rather than relying solely on traditional neutrals, the design introduces bold colours across selected furniture and interior elements, adding a playful dimension to the timeless neoclassical aesthetic.

The result is a home where Neo-classical detailing meets modern comfort, creating an expressive yet enduring interpretation of neoclassical luxury for contemporary family life.

The interior planning of the Gyanaranjan Residence is organised vertically across its G+2 configuration, with each floor responding to a different layer of family life while remaining visually connected through the central courtyard. The courtyard acts as an important spatial pause within the home, bringing daylight, greenery and a sense of openness into the interior and creating visual relationships between the different levels.

The ground floor is centred around the parents’ suite and formal areas, creating a more welcoming and grounded character. The first floor brings together the dining and kitchen with the couple’s and guest bedrooms, while the second floor is planned around the younger generation. This vertical organisation allows the three generations to maintain their own sense of privacy while remaining connected as a family.

Material selection further defines the character of these spaces. Natural sandstone and exposed brick establish an earthy architectural base, while warm wood introduces softness across the interiors. Textured concrete adds depth to the walls, while glass brings transparency and allows natural light to move through the spaces. Metal detailing introduces sharper contemporary accents, creating a considered contrast against the more tactile materials.

The result is an interior where material, light and spatial planning work together to create a home that feels expansive yet intimate, contemporary yet rooted in its context.

The interiors of the Gyanaranjan Residence are developed around a balance of openness, warmth and material richness. The courtyard becomes an important part of this experience, bringing natural light and greenery into the heart of the home while creating visual connections between the surrounding spaces. The dining area continues this sense of openness, with generous proportions, carefully selected furniture and a material palette that brings together wood, stone, glass and textured surfaces.

The bedrooms take a warmer and more intimate approach, using softer textures, natural materials and layered lighting to create comfortable private spaces within the expansive home. Across the interiors, exposed brick, sandstone, wood and textured concrete establish an earthy base, while carefully introduced colours and finishes add depth and character.

The staircase becomes a sculptural element within this composition. Its monolithic sandstone form, inspired by the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves and crafted from a single stone by a sculptor, brings the surrounding landscape into the interior. As it rises, the staircase transitions into deep cobalt-blue perforated metal steps and eventually floating wooden treads, creating an evolving interplay of material, colour and light.

Together, the courtyard, dining spaces, bedrooms and staircase create a continuous interior experience where each space has its own character while remaining connected through a cohesive material language.

Located in Jagamara, Bhubaneswar, the Gyanaranjan Residence is a north-facing G+2 home designed for three generations. Spanning approximately 13,000 sq. ft., the residence brings together family living, private spaces and leisure areas within a contemporary architectural language.

The architectural language balances contemporary geometry with subtle references to Kalinga architecture through form, craft and material expression. Rather than treating these references as decoration, the design integrates them into the character of the home, creating a residence that feels rooted in its context while remaining distinctly contemporary.

The interiors follow the same approach, combining wood, stone, glass and metal with crafted elements to create spaces that feel warm, refined and luxurious. The 16-foot floor heights create a strong sense of volume, while large windows and balconies bring natural light and views of the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves into the home.

A Quiet Urban Retreat

Located in Kharvel Nagar, Bhubaneswar, this 2,200 sq ft residence by Chirag Design Studio blends Japandi aesthetics with Wabi-Sabi principles to create a calm, understated retreat for a couple and their daughter. Designed by Chirag U Swain, the home responds to the constraints of an existing G+2 structure through cantilevered steel balconies, large windows and layered spatial planning that improve natural light, ventilation and privacy.

The interiors embrace natural materials, tactile textures and handcrafted details, combining Kota stone, oak wood, natural cane, grey lime plaster, textured concrete, brass and natural stone. A muted neutral palette is layered with olive green, terracotta and plum accents.

Custom furniture, live-edge timber, arched storage, woven cane, irregular stone surfaces and hand-beaten elements express the Wabi-Sabi philosophy of celebrating imperfection. Japanese-inspired artwork and embroidered blinds featuring Mount Fuji, cranes and birds add subtle cultural references.

From the warm living and dining spaces to the serene pooja room, functional kitchen, handcrafted wash area and tranquil bedrooms, every space prioritises simplicity, functionality, comfort and material honesty. The result is a timeless urban home that feels natural, personal and quietly luxurious.
