For the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) Paryatan Bhavan, Bhubaneswar, Principal Designer Chirag U. Swain approached every interior element as an opportunity to reinforce the building's cultural identity through craftsmanship and bespoke detailing.

Furniture throughout the project features upholstery inspired by Odisha Ikat, bringing one of the state's most celebrated weaving traditions into contemporary workplace environments. Meeting spaces draw inspiration from the timeless craftsmanship of Dhokra art, influencing bespoke design elements and statement pieces that celebrate Odisha's artisanal heritage.

Warm timber finishes, handcrafted furniture, curated artefacts and locally inspired detailing work together to create interiors that feel sophisticated, contextual and unmistakably Odishan. Every material selection contributes to a larger narrative one where regional craftsmanship is interpreted through a contemporary design vocabulary.

At Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) Paryatan Bhavan, Bhubaneswar, art is not treated as decoration it becomes part of the architecture itself.

Designed by Principal Designer Chirag U. Swain, every space celebrates Odisha's rich craft traditions through carefully integrated artistic interventions. Pattachitra compositions have been reimagined as contemporary features, while handcrafted wood carvings and stone carvings reinterpret the intricate detailing traditionally seen in Kalinga temples.

Custom acrylic artworks, sculptural installations and locally crafted artefacts are embedded throughout the interiors, creating moments that celebrate regional identity without overwhelming the modern architectural language.

Rather than displaying Odisha's heritage as museum pieces, the project allows its craftsmanship to become an integral part of the everyday experience, creating an environment where architecture and art exist as one.

Some projects are an opportunity to create more than a building they become an opportunity to define a new architectural language.

For the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) Paryatan Bhavan, Bhubaneswar, Principal Designer Chirag U. Swain envisioned a design approach that could embody the evolving identity of Odisha while remaining deeply rooted in its cultural heritage. This vision led to the conception of Neo-Kalinga a contemporary interpretation of the timeless principles of Kalinga architecture.

Developed for the existing G+2 headquarters of the Tourism Department, Government of Odisha, the project spans a site area of 4,070 sq.m. with a built-up area of 32,828 sq.ft. Rather than replicating historical architecture, Neo-Kalinga seeks to reinterpret its essence through contemporary planning, spatial experience, proportion, and a refined architectural vocabulary that resonates with the present.

The interiors were conceived as welcoming, timeless and experiential environments, reflecting the aspirations of a modern tourism institution while establishing a distinctive sense of place. Every design decision contributes to a narrative that presents Odisha not only as a destination rich in history, but also as a state confidently shaping its future through design.

Every material used in the project was selected to reinforce a clear architectural vision rather than simply complete a façade. Exposed brick, with its timeless character and tactile quality, became the defining element of the building, expressing durability, craftsmanship, and permanence while ageing gracefully alongside the industrial campus.

Visioned by Principal Designer Chirag U Swain and designed by Chirag Design Studio, the Neo-Industrial expression extends beyond aesthetics. The robust brick façade establishes a meaningful dialogue with the surrounding manufacturing facilities, while the landscaped edges soften the composition and create a balanced relationship between industry and nature. The project demonstrates how contemporary corporate architecture can remain deeply connected to its context, allowing innovation and industrial heritage to exist within a single architectural language.

When the client shared their vision, the intention was never to create a conventional office building detached from its surroundings. The aspiration was to design a workplace that felt like a natural extension of the JSL campus an environment where research, innovation, and administration could coexist within an architectural identity that respected the industrial character of the site.

Principal Designer Chirag U Swain and Chirag Design Studio responded with a Neo-Industrial design approach, where exposed brick became the primary architectural language. The earthy palette blends effortlessly with the factory environment and the surrounding greenery of Kalinga Nagar, while carefully crafted masonry, deep openings, and clean geometric forms bring rhythm, texture, and scale to the façade. The result is an architecture that feels authentic to its setting while presenting a contemporary face for the future of the organisation.

Some projects begin with a brief; others begin with a shared vision. For JSL (Jindal Stainless Limited), the vision was to create a 70,873 sq.ft. Corporate Office and Research Centre within the company's manufacturing campus at Kalinga Nagar, Jajpur, Odisha a workplace that would seamlessly belong to its industrial setting while representing innovation, progress, and permanence.

Principal Designer Chirag U Swain, together with Chirag Design Studio, envisioned the project in a Neo-Industrial architectural language that naturally complements the surrounding JSL plant. Rather than competing with the existing industrial environment, the building embraces it through exposed brick, earthy materials, bold forms, and honest detailing. The façade reflects the strength and character of the manufacturing campus while introducing a contemporary identity that is both refined and enduring, creating a workplace rooted in context and purpose.

Ripul's Lounge sits on a one-acre estate in Bhubaneswar, right across from the 11th-century Rajarani Temple, and it was never meant to be part of the main house. Designed by Chirag U Swain of Chirag Design Studio for one of the city's well-known industrialist families, the 1,350sqft pavilion has its own address, in a sense, a place built purely for hosting, with 16 ft ceilings that most five-star lounges would envy.

The design does not hold back. Instead of chasing the minimal look everyone seems to want right now, it goes maximalist, and pulls that boldness straight from Odisha, the colours of Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra chariots, temple motifs, local textiles and craft. Reds, blues and burnt oranges show up everywhere, layered rather than scattered, which is really what separates good maximalism from clutter.

Structurally, the whole thing sits on a steel frame, lifted almost 2 ft off the ground, so it reads as though it is floating above the garden around it. Glass façades slide open on most sides, so the line between the room and the landscape barely exists. The bar sits right at the centre, wrapped in leather, timber and brass, with a chandelier hanging above it under all that ceiling height, doing exactly what a good home bar should, anchoring the room.

Materials carry a lot of the weight here too, deep red leather on the walls, Italian marble underfoot with custom inlay work, brass fittings, crystal light fixtures. Walking in, you pass through a 16ft timber door finished in bronze-copper leaf, which sets the tone before you even see the rest of the space. Cobalt velvet sofas, burnt orange leather chairs, a couple of floral wingbacks and a powder room done up in Black Marquina marble round things off. "It is not really a lounge in the ordinary sense. It is closer to a full expression of Odisha's culture, colour and craft, filtered through a very contemporary, very luxury lens," sums up Chirag.

Set within a one-acre estate overlooking the iconic 11th-century Rajarani Temple, Ripul’s Lounge is a standalone luxury entertainment pavilion designed by Chirag Design Studio under Principal Designer Chirag U Swain. Spanning 1,350 sq. ft. with soaring 16-ft ceilings, it was created for one of Bhubaneswar’s most respected industrialist families a dedicated space to host and celebrate without disturbing the privacy of the main villa.

Moving away from minimalism, the design embraces an eclectic, maximalist language rooted in Odisha’s vibrant culture drawing from the colours of Bhagwan Jagannath’s Rath Yatra chariots, temple traditions, textiles, and crafts. Bold reds, deep blues, and rich oranges come alive through layered textures and handcrafted detail.

Built on a steel framework and elevated nearly 2 ft above ground, the pavilion appears to float within the landscape, while expansive sliding glass façades dissolve the line between indoors and the surrounding gardens. At its heart sits a bespoke central bar wrapped in leather, timber, and brass anchored by a dramatic crystal chandelier beneath the 16-ft ceiling. A material palette of deep red leather wall cladding, custom-inlay Italian marble flooring, brass detailing, and crystal lighting builds an immersive, layered richness. A monumental 16-ft timber entrance door finished in bronze-copper leafing forms a sculptural threshold, while custom furniture cobalt velvet sofas, burnt orange leather chairs, floral wingbacks and a Black Marquina powder room complete the narrative.

A larger living room wasn't the answer. A separate party pavilion was.

Designed by CHIRAG DESIGN STUDIO for a multigenerational family in Bhubaneswar, Ripul’s Lounge is a 1,350 sq. ft. entertainment space built away from the main villa, so gatherings don't take over everyday family life.

The pavilion sits on a raised steel frame, with 16-foot ceilings and wide sliding glass façades that open directly to the lawns. At the centre is a bespoke bar, surrounded by multiple seating zones for everything from small conversations to larger celebrations.

The architecture is straightforward; the interiors are anything but. Deep red leather walls, custom marble inlays, cobalt-blue upholstery, burnt-orange chairs, brass details and a large crystal chandelier create a deliberately maximalist setting. A monumental 16-foot entrance door adds further scale, while the open façades stop the room from feeling heavy.

What makes the project interesting is how clearly the planning supports the brief: one strong central bar, flexible seating, direct access to the garden and enough visual drama to make the pavilion feel like a private hospitality venue rather than an oversized family room.
