“Earthing” has no special full form. It is a technical term that refers to the process of connecting an electrical circuit or equipment to the earth. In this process, any excess electrical current is safely directed into the ground, which helps prevent dangerous voltages and protects against electric shocks.
Main Objectives of Earthing
Safety: Preventing the buildup of dangerous voltage to protect against electric shocks.
Protection: Protecting electrical equipment from damage caused by leakage current (fault current).
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Ensuring proper functioning of electrical systems.
How Earthing Works
Earthing Electrode: Metal rods (such as copper rods) are driven into the ground.
Earthing Conductor: These electrodes are connected to the metallic parts of the equipment.
Flow of Current: If a fault occurs in any equipment causing excess current, it flows directly to the ground through this low-resistance path.
Bonding: Connecting different parts of the installation so that they remain at the same electrical potential.
