Ground improvement (traditional method):*

* In some parts of Kerala, coconut shells are placed in very soft or waterlogged soil to improve drainage and reduce settlement.

*The shells create voids that allow water to drain and help distribute

loads.

* This is generally used only in low-load structures or as a traditional technique, not as a replacement for proper engineered foundations.

2. *Filling material:*

* Coconut shells may be mixed with rubble or used as part of filling in non-structural areas. * They should *not* be used directly under footings that carry significant structural loads unless specifically designed by a geotechnical engineer.

It can be acceptable if it is part of an

engineered ground improvement method.

It is not acceptable if it is being used to

replace concrete, compacted fill, or structural foundation material.
