Structural Engineering -> Big investment, little return.

Have you guys thought about how being an SE is so not worth it financially? You need a masters, but you don't get paid more than B.E. in other civil disciplines. Even an architecture grad going into plumbing automatically makes more than a M.E. civil grad because MEP designers just make more than structural designers. The coursework in M.E. Civil isn't any less rigorous than B.E.. Hell, even a lot of drafters make as much as design engineers, and their work load is lower stress with paid overtime. Also, it is very competitive to get a job at firms like Thornton Tomasetti even though the pay is below average. Job security is also not great; there were mass layoffs the last time the housing crisis hit. Sometimes I wonder why I still stay.... I wish I pulled the trigger and left this exploitative industry before it's too late.
