With the increased demand for construction workers, construction managers need to develop a team of skilled construction laborers they can depend on to complete projects on time and within budget. Watch for these 5 essential skills and abilities when choosing construction workers:

Physical strength and stamina—Construction workers must perform multiple tasks at construction sites that require extensive physical labor, including lifting, climbing, bending, digging, and operating hand and power tools. Look for construction laborers who possess physical strength and stamina.
Manual dexterity and coordination—Along with physical strength, construction workers must have excellent hand-eye coordination, be able to move his/her hands quickly, and be able to grasp and assemble objects with 2 hands. Many jobs require sitting, standing or lying down, and construction laborers must possess multi-limb coordination, which is the ability to work with both arms, both legs or one leg and one arm.
Strong reading and math skills —It is also important for construction workers to be very attentive to specifications made by construction contractors. They must be able to read and interpret blueprints and work related documents. Good math skills are essential for calculating measurements and angles, and determining accurate adjustments. A good understanding of geometry helps with interpreting designs.
Building and mechanical knowledge—Familiarity with building materials and experience using tools involved in the construction, repair and restoration of buildings, highways, bridges, ships and other structures are more important skills to look for in a construction worker. Construction laborers should also have experience in using mechanical tools, operating machines, and maintaining equipment.
Excellent vision and depth perception—Construction jobs require accuracy and precision. For this reason, it is also very important that construction workers have good eyesight. They must have the ability to read blueprints and see details at close range, as well as from a distance. When operating machines, construction workers must be able to see the gauges and dials to make sure everything is functioning properly, and be able to perceive how near or how far to move equipment.

Our Construction Experience is your Advantage

Construction & Engineering Advisors

You will never have to worry that we don't quite 'get it', when it comes to understanding your construction project concerns.

Our hands-on construction experience as engineers and contractors range from large industrial installations, airports, factory automation, drilling, water supply and wastewater treatment, power distribution, even residential remodels, swimming pools and landscaping.

Scholefield has built a practice in construction law litigation through years of practical experience not just practicing law, but by drawing on successful careers working as engineers, project managers, contractors and equipment suppliers.

At Scholefield, we have all performed in one or more of these roles and thoroughly understand the entire construction cycle from initial design to final sign-off.

We provide common sense advice based on how the legal issues will affect your business, not how the legal issues can make the firm more money. We believe our background, experience and quality of our staff makes us unique among all law firms in the construction law field. There may be bigger firms, but few if any have the staff and credentials we have.

You are the most important part of our business

We cannot emphasize this enough: our practice is designed for a single purpose - to help you with construction related legal matters. Any law firm will tell you they will provide aggressive, knowledgable and cost effective representation. That is what all attorneys are expected to do. So, why do you hear this rhetoric so often as a "unique" selling point for a law firm? We don't know either.

We do know that you will ask yourself "What can they do for me that somebody else can't or won't do?

We are Focused - Scholefield does not claim to practice all areas of law. While it may appear impressive to boast that a firm practices in many areas of law, this really is meaningless when you need help with a construction problem.

Your law firm should understand your construction business better than you. Our belief is that there is no substitute for hands-on experience. We have that experience. There are many attorneys that think they have "worked" in construction, but only as lawyers, or as a laborer at some point. There are even fewer attorneys that are also engineers. And there are still even fewer law firms that have engineers and licensed contractors on staff.

Do you know more about construction law than your attorney knows about construction? If the answer is "yes", let's just say you have been warned. Without practical experience, your legal costs could become unnecessarily expensive as you teach your attorney how your business works.

We service all construction industry related clients including manufacturers, agencies, distributors, subcontractors, general contractors and owners. We concentrate only on construction law matters and issues faced by those in this industry. We know the California construction community and are very focused on our area of expertise.

Construction Management

Anybody that manages construction projects, either through a project manager or with a construction management company, needs to know how to manage a project the right way.

By that, we mean that there are a number of essential "must do" procedures and policies that are needed in order to properly document the project and minimize conflicts.

We will train your project management staff on what to do and how to implement procedures, or we can assist you when needed. In particular, we can help most when a project is in its early stages, before things get out of control. This is a proactive approach to managing the work.

Once we get in volved after things go bad, we shift gears to a more reactive and aggressive stance. The strategy is different, and usually more expensive.

Specific practice areas

Construction law builds upon general legal principles and methodologies and incorporates the regulatory framework (including security of payment, planning, environmental and building regulations); contract methodologies and selection (including traditional and alternative forms of contracting); subcontract issues; causes of action, and liability, arising in contract, negligence and on other grounds; insurance and performance security; dispute resolution and avoidance.

Construction law has evolved into a practice discipline in its own right, distinct from its traditional locations as a subpractice of project finance, real estate or corporate law. There are often strong links between construction law and energy law and oil and gas law.

Traditional

This is the most common method of construction procurement and is well established and recognized. In this arrangement, the architect or engineer acts as the project coordinator. His or her role is to design the works, prepare the specifications and produce construction drawings, administer the contract, tender the works, and manage the works from inception to completion. There are direct contractual links between the architect's client and the main contractor. Any subcontractor will have a direct contractual relationship with the main contractor.
