RMA Architects RMA Architects endeavors to develop and evolve culturally specific design solutions for each unique

RMA Architects is an architectural practice with studios in both Mumbai and Boston. From a studio established by Rahul Mehrotra in 1990, the practice was re-formed as RMA Architects in 2010. The following year the practice also launched a not-for-profit venture, RMA Research, an initiative that undertakes research projects related to Architecture and Urbanism in India. The practice is simultaneous

ly engaged with a diverse range of clients, including governmental and non-governmental agencies, corporate and private clients, and institutions. The firm also drives unsolicited architectural and urban projects as an advocacy group in the city of Mumbai. RMA Architects has completed many projects ranging from single-family residences to larger scale buildings and urban designs proposals. Project types include residential, office, institutional, art galleries and retail, as well as conservation of historic structures. Led by a core group of design associates, the studio works actively with local craftspeople to develop and refine construction details and methods of building that are relevant, sustainable, and founded on local knowledge. By working with varied constituencies, and through a multiplicity of modes of engagement with practice, RMA Architects endeavors to develop and evolve culturally specific design solutions for each unique context.

"Capping off the two-day conference was a keynote by Indian architect Rahul Mehrotra, who is head of urban design at Harvard’s GSD and founder of RMA Architects. The theme of his talk was the concept of “flux,” including his theory of “elastic” places that serve several functions – like a cricket field in India that doubles as a wedding venue. Mehrotra also presented thought-provoking ideas about permanence, migration, housing, and transitioning settlements, or what he calls, “the urban time bomb that India is sitting on.” Said Mehrotra: “We can’t think in terms of absolution solutions. As architects, we have to design for transitions—it’s a whole different game.”
