First in Maharashtra: Soon, a CCTV command centre for Navi Mumbai
1) Face recognition software: There are photographs of around 5,500 criminals in the police database. While some of these criminals are now in jail, a majority of them are out on bail. The police will use this software to find out if any of these criminals come to the city and photographs captured by cameras will be matched with those in the police database instantly. It will help them know if history-sheeters are planning crimes in the city.

2) Red light violation software: If any motorist jumps a traffic signal, this software will generate an automated challan with the registration number of that vehicle printed on it. The challan will be sent to the owner of the vehicle. It is an advanced form of the e-challans the police presently issues.

3) Video analytics: If any CCTV camera captures an idle object lying at a junction for a long time, this software will alert the police. The software, which will also be used to track motorists’ activities, is effective enough to capture the colour of the clothes of a driver and the registration number of their vehicle.

The Cidco is allocating Rs 2.5 crore for constructing the centre at the compound of the police commissioner’s office at CBD Belapur and the construction will start within a few months, said a senior police officer.

DURING A FIRE :
* Never try to escape using a lift. Electric circuits are often the first to blow. Getting trapped in a lift during a fire can be fatal. It’s always safer to use stairwells.
* Never jump from an upstairs window. The fall could be fatal. Use blankets as a rope and throw mattresses out to cushion the landing or better still use a purpose-made escape ladder.
* Never hide in a cupboard or under the bed. Fire brigade personnel will find it tough to locate a person inside a cupboard. Also, hiding below the bed or inside a cupboard cannot protect you from the heat and smoke.
