Gianduja or Gianduia (Pronounced as (john-DOO-ya) is a sweet chocolate spread that contains 30% hazelnut paste. Over the years, Gianduja has evolved into what we now know as “Nutella” (1).
While there are several websites that trace the origin of Gianduja to Turin in Italy, a few call it as a myth as well. In case you would like to read through a detailed account on its origins, I particularly enjoyed the article written by Emily Mangini (2. Nutella was created by Pierto Ferrero’s (Founder of the Ferrero company that manufactures Nutella) son Michele as a paste that could be spread, in place of Nutella’s precursor SuperCrema, which was shaped like a loaf that could be sliced and served (3).
