Modern vs. Historical Construction

Historically, these bridges were built using heavy, solid timber logs fitted together with precise carpentry joints.

Today, modern engineering uses Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam). Glulam consists of multiple layers of dimensional lumber bonded together with waterproof adhesives. This allows engineers to manufacture massive, highly durable, and precisely engineered curves that are stronger than natural solid wood. The timber is also chemically treated to resist rot, insects, and weather damage.

Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering that deals with earth materials — soil, rock, groundwater — and how they interact with structures we build.

Think of it as the "foundation doctor" of construction. Before you build a skyscraper, bridge, tunnel, or dam, a geotechnical engineer figures out if the ground can handle it.

What geotechnical engineers actually do

1. Site investigation
They drill boreholes, take soil samples, and run lab tests to see what’s underground. Is it clay, sand, rock? How strong is it? Will it shrink when dry or swell when wet?

2. Foundation design
Based on the soil data, they decide what kind of foundation you need:
Shallow foundations: Spread footings, slabs for decent soil
Deep foundations: Piles, drilled shafts when you need to reach stronger layers deep down

3. Slope & retaining wall stability
They make sure hillsides won’t slide, excavations won’t collapse, and retaining walls won’t topple. Landslide risk, levees, and dams fall here too.

4. Ground improvement
If the soil is weak, they fix it. Techniques include compaction, grouting, stone columns, or replacing bad soil.

5. Groundwater problems
Water changes everything. They design dewatering systems for excavations and analyze seepage through dams and embankments.

6. Earthquake engineering
In seismic zones, they study how soil amplifies shaking, if it might liquefy, and how foundations should resist it.
