Why SS 316 is the Standard Choice for Coastal Projects – Not SS 304
Over the years, we have seen many projects where customers selected SS 304 to reduce initial cost. The material looked perfect at the time of installation, but the situation changed after a few years in coastal environments.
The challenge is not rainwater—it's the salt present in the air.
In locations near the sea, salt particles continuously settle on railings and architectural hardware. Even with regular cleaning, SS 304 can develop tea staining and corrosion over time.
This is exactly why SS 316 is considered the preferred choice for coastal projects. Its added molybdenum content provides better resistance against salt-induced corrosion, helping maintain both appearance and performance for a much longer period.
When selecting materials, the question should not be "What is the lowest cost today?" but rather "What will still look good and perform well five years from now?"
For coastal projects, the answer is usually SS 316.
