Helpful Information about Natural Insecticides

Did you know hot sauce mixed with garlic and water can chase away those annoying caterpillars who have been feeding on your precious plants? You may appreciate butterflies, but not their babies. So, maybe you just want them to relocate to another area. Many natural insecticides are used as repellants rather than as a way to kill insects.

Spider mites hate the mixture of hydrated lime (1/4 c.) and water (add a small drop of soap to help it stick). Be careful not to use too much or the lime could hurt your plants.

Tomato leaves mixed with water can repel insects. Soaps are used in several different types of mixtures. But soaps are washed away with rain or automatic sprinklers.

If you choose to use ni****ne, be aware that it can be deadly as a concentrate to more than just those pesky aphids. It's not only dangerous as harmful cigarette smoke, but it can be beneficial if used properly on plants. For us, the concentrates can cause convulsions and death. So, don't let that toddler grab your supply by accident. It's usually mixed with sulphur and is not recommended for use on edible plants.

Horticulture oils suffocate insects by covering them with an oily film. If that sounds barbaric, just think of the damage that can be done to crops and gardens and even humans by an overpopulation of insect pests. Insect pests can spread diseases and famine.

Homemade sprays can be a great economical alternative to bought sprays. You must know how to adequately measure, store, and use them even if they are homemade and seemingly harmless.

Of course, you can try tricks to rid your problem areas of insects. Like the ants that want to crawl into your hummingbird water. Maybe it doesn't bother the birds, but if it bothers you, you could be imaginative and not have to use any pesticide that may endanger your tiny visiting birds. But tricks aren't always enough. Sometimes you need to use more than one method to keep insect populations under control.

While you don't have to be scared of insects, you do have to be sensible to keep from becoming overrun with them. You should also be a responsible parent and teach your children how to safely combat insects. What your children learn can benefit the next generation. It helps to encourage their interests while they are young and willing to absorb what their parents have to say. Even if they seem to totally ignore all you've taught them as teenagers, they will many times come back to their senses as they grow older. One day, they'll be sharing their insecticide information with their own children or grandchildren.

Teaching about the safe use of insecticides and natural insecticides is the gift that keeps on giving. Your child may want to use this information to obtain a career later in life that revolves around insects, gardening, farming, or science. Nature will thank you for your contribution by continuing to thrive because of your responsible actions.

Let us go over some things you may need to know all about termites. It wouldn’t hurt to know more about them - the information you get will make you understand better the nature and workings of termites.

General Information - All About Termites

Food – Termites feed on materials rich in cellulose – and their favorite food is none other than wood or any wood products and derivatives. This explains the damage on your house structure made of wood.

Breeding – Generally led by a king and queen. In their social system, both of these are their primary reproductives – with the main responsibility of reproducing and propagating their species. They have back-ups called the secondary reproductive, which takes the front role in case the primary reproductives die.

Propagation – The start of new colonies are the result of the winged reproductives or the alates – also known as the swarmers. The pair will find an ideal location for laying eggs. The queen has a lifespan of around 25 years, and lays eggs around 50,000 yearly.

Physical Characteristics – As compared to ants, termites have a straight antennae, uniform waist size and wings of equal size. Termite reproductives are dark brown in color and have two equally sized & formed wings. Termite workers are blind, creamy white in color and have no wings. Termite soldiers have oversized heads and don’t have wings. Soldiers are equipped with large mandibles since they use these in protecting their colony.

Behavior – Termites are eusocial – meaning they have a highly social form of organization. Their class system includes: a.) reproductives (primary & secondary), b.) soldiers and c.) workers. Each has a role and a task to do for the survival of the colony.

Ecosystem Role – Termites help convert dead branches & wood into organic matter. They also make the soil fertile, especially those near their mounds.

Termite Mounds – A structure made by termites with seemingly functional chimneys and ventilation systems. Parts of this structure would serve as their storage area for food.

Preferred Climate – Termites like to live on a place or area with a humid climate – one in which there is sufficient amount of moisture. The soil, is in fact, an ideal place for the subterranean species, precisely because it offers just the right ventilation for air to pass through, at the same time, it holds a certain amount of moisture, which keeps them cool during warm seasons.

Facts About Mosquitoes

Colloquially termed as skeeters and mozzies, mosquitoes belong to the Culicidae family. Such insects have a single pair of scaled wings as well as a slender body and long legs. They also have halteres, which are known to be balancers or poisers that are little knobbed structures. The female species are the ones who suck out blood from humans and animals since they need it in the process of reproduction. Weighing only about 2.0 to 2.5 milligrams, their single flight can last up to 4 to 5 minutes.

Mosquitoes are believed known to be in existence 170 million years ago and even in the Jurassic period when dinosaurs existed. They progressed into the land mass that is presently identified as South America and initially spread to the northern continent of Laurasia. It was also said that the ancestors of these pesters that have been causing skin itchiness were three times bigger and were related to the Chaoboridae group.

Mosquitoes are also known as nectar feeders. The breed of the Toxorhynchites is the biggest existing creature of its kind. Its larvae are predatory on others. In the English literature, their life can be traced back to 1583. They were identified as “biting flies” in order to brush off the confusion with the common “house flies.” In Italian, mosquito is “moschetta” while in French it is “moustique.” When mosquitoes sink their teeth into the skin, it will cause swelling for many hours. Then, there will be a red ringed white bump that is about a centimeter in width. The itchiness remains for days. When the itchy skin is overly scratched, it will bleed and will leave scars when healed.

Mosquitoes could bring diseases such as Malaria Fever, West Nile Virus and Dengue Fever. Malaria Fever is brought about by infection that is normally experienced in tropical regions. In a year, casualties could go as many as one to three million. In the Sub-Saharan Africa, young children are the common victims. As for Dengue Fever, it is an acute febrile sickness found prevalent in countries that have dramatically humid weather. It is caused by serotypes of the Flavivirus genus. It occurs with an onset of high body temperature together with severe headache and muscle pains. There can also be rashes described as bright red petechia.
