A working studio has no room for decoration. Every decision has to earn its place.

The ground floor of Vinod’s studio is where the work actually happens and the design responds to that completely. Potter’s wheels positioned with access to electrical points. Storage racks designed in a streamlined, organised manner so that finished and unfinished ceramic pieces can be stored properly without the space feeling chaotic.

Chattai curtains woven cane covering the loft storage instead of conventional shutters. Light, natural, and completely in keeping with the craft identity of the space.

The walls are white and largely unadorned because the ceramic works displayed on them are the only decoration this space needs or wants.

But the detail that makes this floor extraordinary is underfoot. The flooring is IPS Indian Pattern Stone a cement floor cast on site, rugged enough to handle the daily demands of a production studio. But embedded within it, while the cement was still being cast, are ceramic flower inlays. Small, precise, completely unexpected. The artist’s own craft embedded literally into the floor he works on every single day.

And above it all, industrial pendant lights hang at considered heights chosen specifically for the intensity of light required to see the minute details of clay modelling. In a space where function is everything, even the lighting is purposeful.

This is a floor that knows exactly what it is and does its job without once forgetting who it belongs to.

Before the door even opens, the studio has already told you who lives here.

At Vinod’s ceramic studio in Vadodara, the entrance was designed to do two things simultaneously protect the artist’s privacy and invite the right kind of attention. The fabricated doors combine fluted glass with selective transparent panels, a deliberate decision. The industrial road outside meant unwanted eyes the fluted glass obscures the view from outside while still allowing light to filter softly through. Just enough connection to the outside world. No more.

But the detail that stops you before you reach the door is the nameplate. Made in ceramic, fired in orange crafted by Vinod himself. In most buildings, the nameplate is an afterthought. Here, it is the first work of art you encounter. The studio announces itself in its own language, before you have even stepped inside.

And then there is the tree. A naturally existing tree outside the entrance was retained untouched, unaltered. It provides passive shade to the facade, softens the industrial character of the surroundings, and brings an element of nature to a space that is entirely about working with the earth.

Three decisions at the entrance. Each one deliberate. Each one telling you exactly what kind of space this is going to be.

Designing a ceramic studio demands something most briefs never ask for a complete understanding of the artist’s process before a single line is drawn.

Every spatial decision here was dictated by how ceramic work is actually made. Kilns that run for over 24 hours without interruption.

Heat so intense that conventional ventilation is impossible every window and skylight placed with passive airflow in mind. Raw materials imported from across the world, stored in bulk, worth lakhs where a single drop of water could destroy everything.

And beyond the making, the same space had to function as a professional gallery for buyers and collectors, and a residency for visiting artists from across the country and internationally.

Three entirely different spatial worlds. One building. One brief.
This is what it means to design for craft.

One recurring lesson from this trip - the best architecture never shouts, it simply responds.

To history, in the way old facades carry meaning in every arch and carving. To people, in streets designed not just to connect, but to make you pause. To material, where stone, brick, timber and iron age into character instead of wearing out.

To context because a building only feels timeless when it belongs to its landscape.

We didn’t travel to copy. We travelled to observe and we’re returning with a sharper eye for scale, craft, and design that lasts.

Strasbourg Cathedral. 424 years to build, Gothic laid over Romanesque, one spire standing where two were planned and somehow, the imperfections are what make it iconic.

142 metres, tallest building in the world for over two centuries, built without a single modern tool. Every block of pink sandstone quarried from the Vosges its colour shifts with the light through the day.

Some buildings teach you more by standing still than any brief ever could.

A walk through BMW Welt - one of the world’s most iconic automotive destinations.

Designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au and opened in 2007, BMW Welt in Munich is not just a showroom. It is a building that thinks like the brand it represents bold, aerodynamic, and engineered to perfection.

A double cone roof that appears to float above the structure. A glazed facade with no straight lines. Every architectural decision a direct translation of BMW’s design philosophy into built form.

As architects, we visit spaces not just to experience them but to understand them. And BMW Welt reminded us that the most powerful design is always the one where every decision has a reason.
