We are excited to share our design for the world’s first Midjourney Spa, planned to open near Union Square in San Francisco in 2027.

The 2,300 m² spa brings together traditional bathing rituals and a new form of body imaging developed by Midjourney. Using sound waves in water, the technology creates detailed three-dimensional images of the body, allowing changes to be observed over time.

Our challenge was to make this unfamiliar technology feel like a natural part of the spa experience. Instead of adapting the scanners to a conventional clinical environment, we asked how the architecture itself could respond to the technology.

The idea of making the invisible visible became a guiding principle. Water, light, sound and movement reveal forces and frequencies that constantly surround us but often go unnoticed. The cylindrical scanners become part of a warm and immersive sequence of pools, saunas, cold plunges, fitness spaces and rooms for rest and gathering.

The San Francisco location will be the first in a planned international network of Midjourney Spas, exploring a new relationship between preventive health, wellbeing and architecture.

Heilsulindin verður 2.300 fermetrar og byggir á samspili þekktra baðhefða og nýrrar tækni frá Midjourney. Með hljóðbylgjum í vatni er hægt að kortleggja líkamann í þrívídd og fylgjast með breytingum á honum með tímanum.

Hvernig er hægt að gera slíka tækni að eðlilegum hluta af heimsókn í heilsulind? Sú spurning var útgangspunkturinn í hönnuninni. Skannarnir eru ekki afmarkaðir í klínísku rými heldur samofnir byggingunni og upplifun gestanna.

Hið ósýnilega er gert sýnilegt. Vatn, ljós, hljóð og hreyfing draga fram krafta og bylgjur sem eru stöðugt að verki í kringum okkur án þess að við veitum þeim athygli. Sívalningslaga skannarnir verða hluti af samfelldri ferð um laugar, gufuböð, kalda potta, æfingaaðstöðu og rými fyrir hvíld og samveru.

Heilsulindin í San Francisco verður sú fyrsta af mörgum sem Midjourney hyggst opna víða um heim. Með verkefninu verður til nýr vettvangur þar sem arkitektúr, vellíðan og fyrirbyggjandi heilsuvernd mætast.

You may have noticed that something is taking shape at Iceland Duty Free.

Working closely with Heinemann, we have been redesigning the Iceland Duty Free stores at Keflavík Airport.

Parts of the interior have been 3D-printed using 2.6 tonnes of recycled plastic! You can read much more about that in the article below.

Það er fátt betra en góð tíðindi á föstudegi og í dag fögnum við opnun nýrrar viðbyggingar við hjúkrunarheimilið Skjólgarð á Höfn í Hornafirði. Verkkaupar verkefnisins eru Framkvæmdasýslan - Ríkiseignir og Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður.

Við hátíðlega athöfn fyrr í dag voru meðal annars viðstödd Kristrún Frostadóttir forsætisráðherra, ráðherrarnir Inga Sæland, Alma D. Möller og Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson, ásamt fulltrúum Hornafjarðar, Vigdísarholts, FSRE, Skjólgarðs og verkefnateymisins.

Í nýbyggingunni eru 20 einkarými, skipulögð í tvær 10 manna einingar umhverfis sameiginlegan inngarð – skjólgarð fyrir Skjólgarð. Verkefnið byggir á vinningstillögu Basalt Arkitekta í opinni hönnunarsamkeppni árið 2019.

Garðurinn veitir skjól úr öllum áttum og sameiginleg rými liggja að honum. Borðstofur eininganna snúa að inngarðinum á meðan setustofurnar teygja sig út í umhverfið og mynda sjónás yfir Hornafjörð með beina stefnu á Fláajökul. Hvert einkarými hefur jafnframt beina tengingu út á eigin verönd og útsýni sem nýtur sín hvort sem heimilisfólk situr, stendur eða liggur.

Opnun nýbyggingarinnar markar mikilvægan áfanga í heildarendurnýjun Skjólgarðs en næsti áfangi felst í endurbótum á eldra húsnæðinu.

Við erum ánægð að geta nú deilt fyrstu ljósmyndunum af verkefninu sem eru teknar af Ragnari Th. Sigurðssyni - Arctic Images.

Few things are better than good news on a Friday – and today we are celebrating the opening of the new wing of Skjólgarður Nursing Home in Höfn.

The inauguration ceremony earlier today was attended by Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir; ministers Inga Sæland, Alma D. Möller and Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson; as well as representatives from Hornafjörður municipality, Vigdísarholt, FSRE, Skjólgarður and the project team.

The new extension contains 20 private rooms, organised as two ten-resident households around a shared internal courtyard — a sheltered garden at the heart of Skjólgarður. The project is based on Basalt Architects’ first-prize proposal in an open architecture competition in 2019.

The courtyard is sheltered from all directions, with shared spaces arranged around it. Dining rooms face the garden, while the living rooms extend outward into the surrounding landscape, forming a visual axis across Hornafjörður towards Fláajökull glacier. Each private room also opens directly onto its own terrace, with views designed to be enjoyed whether residents are sitting, standing or lying down.

The opening of the new extension marks an important milestone in the wider transformation of Skjólgarður, with renovation of the existing building to follow.

Sumarið er árstíminn þar sem margir eru á ferð um landið og heimsækja áfangastaði sem við höfum haft ánægju af að hanna. Það er fátt skemmtilegra en að sjá fólk njóta þeirra.

Sundlaugin á Hofsósi er eitt af þeim verkefnum sem okkur þykir sérstaklega vænt um. Þótt hún sé ekki stór býður hún upp á einstaka upplifun, þar sem laugin og útsýnið yfir Skagafjörð renna nánast saman í eina heild. Markmiðið með hönnuninni var að skapa stað þar sem landslagið fær að njóta sín og verða órjúfanlegur hluti af upplifun gesta.

Summer is a busy season for many of the destinations we have had the pleasure of designing. There is little more rewarding than seeing people experience and enjoy these places.

One of our favourite projects is the Hofsós Swimming Pool. Though modest in size, it offers a truly unique experience, where the pool and the panoramic views across Skagafjörður almost merge into one. The design was guided by the ambition to create a place where the surrounding landscape takes centre stage and becomes an inseparable part of the visitor experience.

It makes us happy to read reviews like this:

Earth Lagoon Mývatn is opening it’s doors soon in a brand new facility designed by Basalt Architects. The amazing geology of the area is front and center in the design, contrasted by the warm blue geothermal waters.

Skrímslið undir ísnum (English below)

Löngu áður en heitt vatn uppgötvaðist í Urriðavatni gengu sögur um dularfullar vakir í ísnum. Sumir töldu þær vera merki um Tusku, furðuskepnu sem átti að leynast í vatninu, á meðan aðrir sögðu frá Nykri, hamhleypu vatnaskrímsli úr íslenskum þjóðsögum.
Þessar sagnir urðu til í kringum raunverulegt náttúrufyrirbæri. Jafnvel í hörðustu frostum héldu heitar uppsprettur hluta vatnsins íslausu og mynduðu vakir sem vöktu bæði forvitni og ímyndunarafl heimamanna, kynslóð eftir kynslóð.

Þetta sama fyrirbæri varð síðar innblástur að hönnun Vök Baths.
Nafnið „Vök“ vísar til þeirra opa sem myndast í ísnum yfir heitum uppsprettum. Þessar náttúrulegu myndanir urðu leiðarljós í hönnun staðarins, og má sjá áhrif þeirra víða um verkefnið, allt frá lögun fljótandi lauganna til smáatriða í byggingunni sjálfri. Með því að sækja innblástur í þjóðsögur svæðisins og einstakar aðstæður staðarins leitast verkefnið við að skapa sterkari tengingu milli gesta og staðarins sem þeir upplifa.

The Monster Beneath the Ice

Long before geothermal water was discovered in Lake Urriðavatn, locals told stories about mysterious openings in the ice. Some believed they were created by Tuska, a strange creature said to roam beneath the frozen surface, while others spoke of Nykur, the shape-shifting water horse of Icelandic folklore.

These legends emerged from a very real natural phenomenon. Even in the coldest winters, warm geothermal springs prevented parts of the lake from freezing, creating unusual openings in the ice that sparked curiosity and imagination for generations.

The same phenomenon later inspired the architecture of Vök Baths.

The name Vök refers to the openings that form in the ice above the geothermal springs. These natural formations became the guiding idea behind the design of the destination and can be seen throughout the project—from the shape of the floating pools to details within the building itself. By drawing on local folklore and the unique conditions of the site, the project seeks to create a deeper connection between visitors and the landscape they are experiencing.

💧 World Bathing Day 2026 💧

It is no secret that we at Basalt Architects love bathing.

We have spent many years exploring the relationship between water, landscape and human experience. We are immensely proud of each and every bathing environment we have designed; the Blue Lagoon Iceland, Forest Lagoon, Sundlaugin á Hofsósi, Vök Baths, Geosea, Guðlaug, Kerlingarfjöll - Highland Base, Earth Lagoon Mývatn, Fontana Steam by the Lake and more on the way, both in Iceland and abroad.

We look forward to bringing our exhibition SOAK: Rituals of Collective Belonging to Venice Biennale next year, a collaborative project by Basalt Architects, Gagarin and Rán Flygenring. There, we will explore Icelandic bathing culture and the role of baths, pools and hot springs as social infrastructure—places that foster connection, equality and a sense of belonging.

Today, on World Bathing Day, we celebrate the traditions, rituals and communities that form around water. Bathing is never just about the water but about the people, places and shared experiences that gather around it. 💙
