Our friendly local game store is called Nexus.

For your convenience one of our players will pick you up on both days and we will see you safely home at days end. As for the Tournament fee. On the actual day is good enough and could then be as easily in Icelandic kronas. 60 euros (about 75$ US

D) amounts to 9000 kronas. Currency converter:

Included in the fee is a special T-shirt and the rest is mostly to cover the cost of meals. Our gaming group is Einherjar, if you look up the back of the front cover of the main rulebook you will find the name of our group and my name as well. At the core we have a playtest group of very active players plus more casual players. Our gaming group is in a number of other army list books, most recent are Devil's Charge Desperate Measures. Reykjavik is very modern but not very large. Same rules here apply as anywhere else in Western Europe or North America. I asked my friend Gareth Richards who has been here on a few occasions about how he did it and he recommended www.booking.com. Most people would just like to book through www.booking.com and select Reykjavik. Look at the map and make sure you are in Reykjavik, the entire capital area has about 250.000 people living there including nearby districts like Hafnarfjörður, Garðarbær and Kópavogur, but I would recommend you find a place within Reykjavik If you want you can ask me about places but almost all would be satisfactory, but some are situated closer to the city centre and are therefore more likely to be within walking distance of most attraction/services. Also it would be clever to give me a selection to choose from and I will give you my best advice. Restaurants are plentiful and well within good means. In fact a high end meal is far less expensive here than in many other countries and we have Subway, pizza and most everything else, well except MacDonalds which is not in Iceland. Crime rate is noticeably low in Iceland, pickpocketing unheard of, but still be vary of leaving expensive cameras, handbags or phones unattended. You will arrive at Keflavik Airport and you should take the Flybus to Reykjavik. About a 40 minute ride through an odd landscape that was actually used by NASA to prepare the Astronauts for the Moon landings. Until 2007 there used to be a large US Airforce base at Keflavik and there is a joke you should be aware of, it was that Iceland was a great posting, with a virgin under every tree. You will get the joke on arrival. Be sure to buy a return ticket as that is somewhat cheaper but the price of a return ticket is today 3.500 IKR or about 30 $USD or 22 EUROS. The tickets are bought inside the terminal just to your right when you leave customs (the Airport is small and neat, a far cry from large international airports). If you arrive a day early then we plan to show you about Reykjavik and you should bring a swimsuit because in February then going to an outdoor swimming pool in darkness and cold and still finding the swimming pool very warm since it is heated with geothermal water is quite an experience. You might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Are you aware of the Einherjar handicap rule? For Saturday night we have a big game planned and it is a fun/non serious event. The Tournament is also supposed to be a fun event. We decided to run with international invites for added enjoyment of all, it would be a pleasure to host an event with like minded players from other countries. But since the Flames of War community is very much 30+ a number of us have decent incomes and this is a good chance to see Iceland, even if it is for a short stay.

+++ OPERATION WESERÜBUNG
+++ 9 APRIL 1940
+++ ACTION OFF LOFOTEN

Historical action, the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are returning from Narvik when they have a chance encounter with the venerable battleship HMS Renown.

FORCES:

KRIEGSMARINE: Scharnhorst and Gneisenau
ROYAL NAVY: HMS Renown

BATTLE:
The two forces met in heavy seas and the two German ships presented their broadsides. Bad gunnery saved both from the worst. After firing several salvos against each other Gneisenau had taken considerable damage and the German ships decided to withdraw and it became a chase. The Germans escaped without being crippled although Gneisenau had lost over half its hull points. HMS Renown had lost close to half of hers.

But the main thing is the German ships would live to fight another day.

A rather fun an realistic battle.

Playtest 2
Very different, looked like the Polish didn’t get a break, but oddly the end result was better (more Polish units escaped to Romania.

I think the basic design is now solid.

Dry run 1
Good test

"Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen."

D - deployment

1 - Turn 1, first attacks, Polish use two special counters, a train in P3 (close to Mokra) and aircraft to counter Luftwaffe in P4. Polish forces hold Danzig, Modlin, Poznan, Kraków and P12 Capathian Mountains. Not a goo turn for the Germans.

2 - Turn 2, Renewed attacks, Polish use their second train at Prusy P6 and second aircraft at Bzura P5. Germans win at Danzig, but only remove the Fortification marker. Germans fail again at Modlin and miraculously the Poles still hold out in Poznan, but are now cut from supply! Elsewhere the Germans push through but it is the end of turn 2 and they have yet to attack Warsaw and Lwow, both fortified cities!

3 - The Germans continue their assault, this time attacking both Warsaw and Lwow. Now the Polish have no more special counters and are hard pressed. Germans win a victory at Danzig and Warsaw and everywhere, except Lwow And Carpathian Mountains. Good progress, but is it enough?

4 - Turn 4 and the Soviet Army arrives, unopposed but must still attack and roll against Polish 0 strength and the Pripyat Marshes (+2) defence. Soviets win everywhere. Germans win all their battles except in the mountains.

5 - Last turn is a disaster for the Polish. Their forces are now out of supply and cannot retreat anywhere. Soviets capture Lwow (as was agreed on historically) and only one Polish manages to escape to Romania.

6 - END

Everything worked as it should, the playtest was quite tense at the end of turn 2 because the Germans had been delayed and might not be able to win, but the Polish had used all their specials and it was a complete victory for the new friends, Germans and Soviets. The few Poles that escaped would eventually form the core of the Polish Forces in Exile.

SIX O´CLOCK
+++ BATTLE OF BRITAIN
+++ 15 AUGUST 1940
+++ DOGFIGHT

A basic dogfight with 4 aircraft on each side.

FORCES:

LUFTWAFFE: 4x Bf-109 Messerschmitt aircraft, skill 5, 4, 3 and 2
RAF: 4x SPITFIRE II aircraft, skill 5, 4, 3 and 2

BATTLE
Germans deployed first and ended in a strong central position. I was playing against Alex, and this was his second BRS game. Alex is a true Englishman and polite guest and he brought his favourite English tea and biscuits, seeing how we were playing the Battle of Britain. The aircraft were soon in a dogfight, and boom chits started to stack on both sides. The breakthrough was when a RAF rookie was downed. That brought the total of boom chits over the number of active aircraft. But as a newbie game I decided to go for the double number. The fight continued and a Spitfire managed to tail my Ace and hit him at disadvantage. Now all I needed was to roll one 6 on eight dice. It didn’t happen… and Alex won the game. But in a sense we both won as we both had fun and now Alex has learned a thing or two, like manoeuvre order and the six o’clock position ;)

INTERCEPTION
+++ ICELAND SOUTH-WEST CORNER
+++ 24 OCTOBER 1942
+++ HIDE AND SEEK

This is a historical mission. On 24 October 1942 a Fw-200 Condor set off from Tromsö in Norway for a reconnaissance flight over Iceland.

FORCES:

LUFTWAFFE: 1x Fw 200 Condor – skill 3

USAAF: 2x P-39 Airacobra – skill 3

The aircraft are painted the same as the actual aircraft, down to markings and numbers.

I have changed the rules for the mission, the Condor can do a dive, but only gets +3” if it does. The win rate is about even, slightly favouring the Airacobras.

DEPLOYMENT:

Condor 36” from the edge where it escapes, starts advantaged.
2x Airacobras, 12” from the same edge, facing the Condor. Start disadvantaged.

The mission is hoot. Airacobras must scramble to gain advantage while the Condor must use what cover they have (usually just one cloud).

This game I managed to get the Cobra undamaged into a cloud while the Airacobras had two turns of attack runs, twice shooting at the Condor twice in a turn. But they were confounded by bad accuracy and an disadvantaged, but undamaged Condor escaped into cloud cover at the edge!

A good week, good games in good company!
