Everyone talks about wanting the Italian "slow life."

But nobody tells you how slow it actually gets.

You move to Italy dreaming of long, lazy afternoons.

But "slow life" also means navigating a completely different rhythm of daily.

Especially as the summer heat rolls in.

Take the Riposo (the afternoon break).

In the smaller, charming villages of Abruzzo, it’s a sacred law.

Between 13:00 and 16:30, the world stops.

Need a pharmacy? Closed.

Need the local Comune to hand over a document? Definitely closed (and likely only open two mornings a week anyway).

If you live in a bigger hub like Pescara you have more flexibility with continuous hours (Orario continuato).

But even there, when summer hits, the unwritten local rules apply.

Systems go down, the one person who signs your specific paper is on vacation, or a handwritten note on a wooden door tells you they closed early because it’s "too hot today."

It sounds frustrating, and it can be if you're trying to rush it with a non-Italian mindset.

But once you stop fighting the rhythm, you realize this is the price of peace.

The same pharmacist who closed early will remember your name next week.

At Wanderlust Abruzzo, we help you bridge that gap.

We know which offices require an appointment, who closes for Riposo, and how to get things done without losing your sanity.

We don't just find you a house; we teach you the rhythm of your new home.

Let's talk about the Italian rental marketespecially here in Abruzzo.

Because it can be absolutely brutal.

When we relocated here in 2022, we chose to rent first.

We wanted to discover the area, test the vibes, and decide without pressure where we wanted to buy later.

We thought we were prepared.
After all, we even spoke Italian!

But we still made the ultimate beginner mistake:
We tried messaging agents online.
And got ghosted more times than I can count.

Eventually, we learned the golden rule of Italian real estate:
You don't text.
You call.

But even then, calling from a non-Italian number came with its own set of hurdles and immediate hesitation from landlords.

Now, at Wanderlust Abruzzo, we help our clients navigate this exact chaos.

But I always keep it real with them: it’s not easy.

Sure, a higher budget opens more doors, but the pitfalls remain the same.

If you are hunting for a rental right now, whether on your own or with support, there is one non-negotiable question you must ask the agent:

“Will this contract be officially registered at the Agenzia delle Entrate?”

Just last month, four different agencies told me directly that their rentals were not up for registration.

But does this matter?

If the contract isn't registered, you cannot claim residency (Residenza).

And without residency, your dreams of Italian tax incentives or staying here long-term are blocked.

Landlords might try to lure you in with low prices, but a solid, legal contract is a legal obligation in Italy.

Don't compromise on your safety.

Are you currently struggling with the rental market here? Let’s vent in the comments, or shoot me a DM if you need a local partner to make those phone calls for you.

Don't let a "Voltura" ruin your first night in Italy.

There is a specific kind of panic that sets in when you realize your dream home doesn't have a running water contract yet.

Or that the power is still in the name of a person who passed away in 1982.

The "Voltura" (transferring utilities) is one of those tasks that sounds simple but can quickly turn into a headache of IBANs, tax codes, and endless hold music.

In Italy, you don't just "call the electric company."

You navigate a maze of providers, POD numbers, and PDR codes.

Wanderlust Abruzzo was created because we wanted to be the practical partner we wish we’d had.

We can handle these phone calls for you and make sure the "boring stuff" is sorted before you even arrive, so you can spend your first night with a glass of Montepulciano, not a flashlight.

No candles needed, unless it’s for a celebration dinner.😉

"Will I be okay if I get sick in Italy?"

Decoding the Tessera Sanitaria.

One of the biggest "trust hurdles" for expats is healthcare.

It’s the late-night worry:

"How do I choose a doctor?"

"What happens in an emergency?"

Today I’m breaking down the basics of the Tessera Sanitaria (the Italian health card).

The Italian healthcare system is actually not that nightmare that many picture.

But the path to get your card is a step-by-step climb:

You need residency first, then your Codice Fiscale, then your local ASL visit.

It sounds straightforward, but standing in the wrong line or missing one tiny document can send you back to square one.

That is why we created Wanderlust Abruzzo.

We don’t just explain the process; we can actually stand in those ASL lines with you to make sure nothing gets lost in translation.

Peace of mind is the ultimate luxury when moving abroad.

Let’s make sure you have it.

Want to know exactly how to navigate the system?

We've put together a full guide on the blog, breaking down everything from residency requirements to choosing your family doctor.

In Italy, coffee isn't a drink.

It's a 3-minute social contract.

One of the most important things I learned after moving to Italy is the ritual of the "Caffè al banco."

You don't just "grab a coffee" to go in a paper cup.

You stand at the bar, you exchange news with the barista, you acknowledge your neighbors, and you officially start your day.

This 3-minute ritual is where the magic can happen.

It’s where you hear about the best local market, who is selling their vineyard, or why the weather is "afoso" today.

Our job at Wanderlust Abruzzo is to make sure you feel confident enough to join that conversation.

We support you with the "not-so-pleasant" stuff, so that you can focus on the important things:

Learning the names of the people at your local bar.

Why that €30,000 "bargain" might cost you double if you don't check the fine print.

We all love the idea of the "cheap" Italian house.

You see the listing, you see the stone walls, and you think:

"This is it!"

But in Italy, a low price tag often comes with a hidden history.

Is the house actually registered correctly in the Catasto?

Are there five distant cousins who technically own a share of the garden and haven't been spoken to since the 90s?

Does the "renovated" roof actually have a certificate of occupancy?

In the world of bargain properties, what you don't see is usually more expensive than what you do see.

But don't let that scare you away!

With the right eyes and a little local expertise, you can absolutely find your perfect, affordable Italian home.

We're here to guide you through the details, asking the questions the agents often forget to mention.

If you’re ready to start your search, book a consultation call or send a message.💚

Sea breeze or Cathedral views? Which is your Abruzzo "Vibe" ?

Living in Abruzzo since 2022, I’ve realized that choosing a home here isn’t just about the property.

It’s about the soul of the city.

Two of our biggest neighbors, Pescara and Chieti, couldn't be more different.

Pescara is modern, busy, and coastal.

If you want to walk from your espresso straight to the beach and love the energy of a vibrant city, Pescara is your match.

While Chieti is historic, calm, and elevated.

If you prefer thousand-year-old streets and a traditional, slow pace of life on the hill, Chieti is where you’ll thrive.

Choosing the right location changes your entire expat experience.

That’s why we help our clients "vibe check" these locations before they commit.

You’re not just buying a house; you’re choosing your future daily routine.

Which one sounds like you?

Team Beach or Team History?

In Italy, "Let’s talk on the phone" is the national sport.

But your renovation needs more than a chat.

If you’re hunting for "bargain" houses in Abruzzo, you’ll quickly notice a pattern:

Italians love to talk.

A phone call is warm, personal, and full of "non ti preoccupare" (don't worry).

But here is the hard truth:

A verbal "yes" is impossible to prove when things go wrong.

I’ve seen it happen too often:

An expat gets a verbal quote for a roof repair or a "yes" on a property detail over a friendly espresso.

But six months later, when the budget doubles or the work isn't done, the answer is often: "Ah, I never said that!"

The struggle to get things in writing (per iscritto) is a real cultural clash.

It’s the gap between the Italian love for verbal trust and the expat’s need for legal security.

Especially with cheap houses, the hidden costs live in the things that weren't documented.

That’s where we step in.

We are the ones who insist on the email, the written quote, and the signed paper.

We handle the "uncomfortable" persistence so you don't have to.

Don't just take their word for it.

Let’s get it in writing and keep your dream safe.

You know you’ve officially arrived to Italy when you stop being "the foreigner" and start being "Cara/Caro."

It happens slowly and unexpectedly.
Helping our clients move here isn’t just about the paperwork; it’s about navigating the bureaucracy so you have the headspace to enjoy these moments.
For me, it looked like this:

One day I walked into the local Tabacchi, prepared to give my usual polite "Buongiorno," but before I could speak, the lady behind the counter looked up, smiled, and said: "Ciao Cara, the usual?"

In a world that’s moving faster and becoming more anonymous, Abruzzo offers a different pace.

Being called "Cara/Caro" (dear) isn't just a friendly greeting; it's an invisible contract of belonging.

It means they’ve noticed you.

They know you live up the hill, they know which stamps you need or how you take your coffee, and they’ve silently accepted you into the community.

This is exactly why I moved here in 2022.

It’s not just the mountain views; it’s the human warmth that greets you at the counter.

Helping our clients move here isn’t just about the paperwork, it’s about navigating the bureaucracy so you have the headspace to enjoy these moments.

Our goal is to get you to your first "Ciao Cara/o" moment.

Because that’s the day a house truly becomes a home.

Ready to trade anonymity for community?

If you’re dreaming of a life where you’re more than just a tourist, let’s make it happen.

From legal residency to finding your place in the local culture, we are here to guide you.

They say moving to Italy is an act of bravery.

I say it’s an act of liberation.

Today, April 25th, Italy celebrates Festa della Liberazione.

It’s a day of freedom, reflection, and community.

For me, it’s also a powerful reminder of the freedom I felt when I finally settled into my life here in Abruzzo.

Moving abroad is more than just a change of address; it’s an act of bravery.

It’s about liberating yourself from the "expected" path and choosing a life that actually tastes like yours.

One espresso, one mountain view, and one sunset at a time.

But, true freedom only comes when you aren't drowning in paperwork.

If you have the dream of making Italy your home, we have the roadmap to get you there without the stress.

Let’s make 2026 the year you stop dreaming and start living like a local.

Ready to start your own liberation?
