Como, Italy

The GRAL project was conceived out of the need to give identity and character to an apartment located within a newly built residential complex. Our interior design intervention is based on a clean and rigorous formal language, focused on compositional clarity and the precise definition of living spaces.

We chose to work on the articulation of surfaces and the hierarchy of functions through the introduction of custom-made boiserie, which become the defining element of the project. The boiserie not only serves a decorative purpose, but also takes on an architectural role, marking the different areas of the home and providing a sense of visual and material continuity.

A central theme of the project is the interplay of volumes, which we sought to make the protagonist of the spatial experience. This dialogue between solid and void is enhanced through the use of color: grey, chosen to clad functional volumes and selected walls, contrasts with the dominant white of the architectural envelope, creating an essential yet visually striking chromatic balance.

The juxtaposition of these two tones generates an elegant visual rhythm, helping to precisely define the geometries of the space while conveying a sense of depth and lightness. The result is a sophisticated and contemporary atmosphere, in which every element is designed to interact harmoniously with the others, without ever overwhelming the overall composition.

The penthouse is located in a villa dating back to the early 1900s, just a few steps from the historic center of Como. The intervention was particularly invasive: most of the internal load-bearing walls were demolished and replaced with steel beams supporting the roof, allowing the apartment to be reorganized with proportions more suitable for contemporary living.

A distinctive feature of this project is the play we created with the ceilings, integrating the original slopes. Equally important are the large openings that separate the living area from the kitchen and dining room, creating distinct spaces while maintaining visual continuity.

The materials used in the renovation include marble and parquet laid in a herringbone pattern, which together give the apartment a sense of harmony and elegance. Additionally, the balcony in the living area was enlarged to enhance natural light and allow residents to fully enjoy the view of the city.

The renovated building is located within the historic village of Pognana Lario, accessible only via narrow semi-pedestrian streets (mule tracks).

All the façades were stripped to highlight the natural stone, and the roof was completely rebuilt. Inside, the decision was made to preserve all the load-bearing walls, creating only selective openings to ensure the flow between rooms without altering the spatial characteristics. A key intervention was the creation of two new openings on the south façade to enhance natural light and improve the connection between interior and exterior spaces.

The most distinctive change was the addition of a new staircase, designed not only to connect all floors of the building but also to create a luminous and spatial link across the different levels. The staircase was designed as a lightweight iron structure. Materials used throughout include resin and parquet flooring, while all walls and fixed furniture are finished in white to maximize interior brightness.
