What makes learning to swim from an early age so important?

In the third interview of our learn-to-swim series, Michael Elliott, founder of Red Whale Swim School, shares the personal story that inspired him to create a swimming environment designed specifically for young children.

From warm water and teachers in the pool to spaces where children can feel comfortable and confident, Michael explains why swimming is much more than a sport: it is a life skill.

He also reflects on how the flexibility of the Myrtha system can open up new possibilities for bringing learn-to-swim facilities into unconventional existing spaces.

Long after the medals were awarded, the Olympic Aquatic Centre continues to fulfil the purpose it was designed for 🇫🇷

Created for Paris 2024, the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Saint-Denis is now a public destination where elite sport, swimming education and everyday aquatic activities come together under one roof.

At its heart is a 70-metre competition pool equipped with Myrtha movable bulkheads and a movable floor, allowing the space to be adapted into more than ten different configurations for competitions, training and community activities. Myrtha Track Start blocks further support sporting use, while the complex also includes dedicated learn-to-swim and leisure pools.

Designed by VenhoevenCS and Ateliers 2/3/4/, with Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France as main contractor, the centre brings together flexible aquatic infrastructure, architecture and ambitious sustainability goals to create a lasting resource for both sport and the local community.

What helps children build confidence and develop their skills in the water?

In the second interview of our learn-to-swim series, Emmanuel Rapp, swimming teacher at Red Whale Swim School in Geneva, shares how the programme supports children throughout their swimming journey.

From baby swimming to more advanced levels, each stage is built around specific skills and adapted to the needs of young swimmers. Warm water, teachers in the pool and small groups, particularly at the earliest stages, all play an important role in creating the right environment to learn and progress.

Built for Rio 2016. Still creating value nearly a decade later 🏊🏼

The competition pool inaugurated at Parque Oeste Ana Gonzaga is the same 50-metre Myrtha pool originally installed for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

After the Games, it was dismantled, relocated across Rio de Janeiro and reassembled while retaining its original technical specifications and international competition standards.

Today, it serves the local community through learn-to-swim programmes, aquatic activities and recreational use for people of all ages, demonstrating how modular technology can extend the life of world-class aquatic infrastructure far beyond a major sporting event.

Water can be a powerful space for confidence, connection and inclusion 💫

On 25 July, to mark World Drowning Prevention Day, we welcomed artistic swimming world champion, World Aquatics ambassador and Fiamme Oro athlete Giorgio Minisini to Aquamore Ghedi for a special day with ASD AOLE. Supported by Myrtha for several years, the association helps people with intellectual disabilities develop greater independence and build social connections through inclusive sporting and social activities.

Together, the participants took part in a dry-land training session and an in-water lesson, before watching Giorgio perform an artistic swimming routine. The experience reflected an important message: learning to swim is not only an opportunity to practise a sport, but also a life skill that can build confidence, promote inclusion and help prevent drowning.

A meaningful day shaped by shared experiences in and around the water.
