When things aren't what you may think.....
A pool owner contacted us to say that his cleaning robot was always full of sand when he went to empty it and he thought he may need his filter changed.
However, on investigation his filter had glass filtration media in it which was green and the "sand" in his robot as brown so the problem wasn't the filter.
A water test showed that the LSI reading was positive meaning that the water it depositing calcium carbonate into the pool that looked a little bit like sand.
There is a quick test that you can do in order to tell the difference between sand and calcium carbonate. Spray the sample with some Viakal and if it starts to fizz then it is calcium carbonate and not sand.
