The closing of 2023 also marks and important date for Studio FTA. The studio will leave behind its headquarters at theon the ground floor in Via Zenale, in the award winning building by Filippo Taidelli in 2010.
With this farewell, we wanted to highlight some of the key features of this project, one of studio’s most acclaimed works to date.
The building, constructed in the early 20the century, was entirely renovated by FTA with special attention and limitations towards the historical context, particularly, the 15th century Casa degli Atellani garden which flanks the northern facade, and the proximity of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church.
The retrofit solution was led by the desire to create a contemporary presence, while respecting the implicit need to conserve the existing volume. The exterior intervention involved the insertion of a series of loggia at the facade’s center, thereby creating the semblance of a contemporary tower. The previously blind facade was literally cut open in order to create the loggia, and further punctuated by the insertion of apertures on each floor.
The plaster of the “tower” was removed to expose the original brick, which was painted white to further simulate the idea of a more contemporary volume.
The creation of double exposure on the northern and souther fronts, guaranteed abundant natural light and unique vistas onto the Atellani garden. From the prospective of the garden, Zenale building appears as a harmonious, hovering neighbor.
