C***o d’Aola – intermediate station

The intermediate station at C***o d’Aola is conceived as a light, open structure resting on the slope.

The continuous timber roof, a strong element defining the architectural identity, provides shelter while simultaneously allowing the landscape, movement, and infrastructure to remain visually connected to the mountain.

Large openings on the façade frame the alpine landscape, transforming the mountains into a part of the interior space. When summertime’s milder weather takes over the harsh cold, the interior fully opens up toward the view, dissolving the boundary between inside and outside.
With nature flowing effortlessly into the architecture, the restaurant and the terrace merge into a single continuous space.

The terrace, sheltered by the timber structure, overlooks the alpine landscape and becomes a place to pause, gather, and directly experience the alpine environment while extending the interior space through a continuous transition between inside and outside.

The alpine hut is located at the top station, embedded into the natural terrain.
The lower level houses the cable car infrastructure, while the upper level accommodates the restaurant, opening towards the surrounding alpine landscape.

The interior of the alpine hut is conceived as a single, open volume shaped by a timber structure. The pitched geometry defines rhythm and proportion, opening the space towards the alpine landscape and integrating the surrounding mountains into the interior experience.

Green light from the authorities for our Ponte di Legno project!

Conceived as part of a broader territorial continuity, the project understands infrastructure as an integral part of the alpine landscape. Construction is planned for 2026.

Set within the alpine landscape of Ponte di Legno, the project introduces new mountain stations and an alpine hut along the Valbione–C***o d’Aola–Angelo axis, reaching up to 2.200 meters above sea level.

Peter Pichler Architecture was honored to participate in InDizajn - Interior Design Fair Festival of Modern Home in Zagreb, where Peter Pichler gave a lecture on how tradition and local context inform our approach to contemporary architecture.

It was a pleasure for our studio to engage with a dedicated design community focused on architecture that values meaning and care, and we thank the organizers for their kind invitation and warm welcome.
