We designed a building-landscape. The competition for the new Vilnius Congress Center set us a difficult site: between the Parliament, the National Library and the river Neris. Rather than another large object, we asked ourselves what could hold all of this together. HABITAT grew out of that question: a congress center that opens onto the city. Its heart is a civic greenhouse, where inside and outside blend. At ground level, a podium becomes a square on the river; from there the public ground rises, through galleries, gardens and rooftops to walk across. Large column-free halls, designed to change shape. The underlying idea is simple: one day no one should call it “the congress center”, but simply a piece of the city.
