The ancients did not conceive their plans on drawing boards. Their buildings rose bit by bit in natura. Thus they were readily governed by that which struck the eye in reality. They did not stop to correct defects in symmetry that were evident only on paper.

"And we begin to see that we are time. We are this space, this clearing opened by the traces of memory inside the connections between our neurons. We are memory. We are nostalgia. We are longing for a future that will not come. The clearning that is opened up in this way, by memory and by anticipation, is time: a source of anguish sometimes, but in the end a tremendous gift."

Extract from “The Order of Time” di Carlo Rovelli (2017), Adelphi.

The “Y” Skylight

On the map, indispensable in this labyrinth, the city is shaped like a star with twisted and elongated vertices; only the vertices are built on; the spaces in between are a kind of ravine, into which small alleys descend black like ovens…
Siena's topography is so bizarre and irregular that behind the palace lies the countryside, fields and gardens that descend into a ravine between two hills overlooked by other parts of the city.

The “Y” Skylight

"An extraordinary city... I don't think there could be anything more, it's incredible, you stop every moment, nose in the air, facing disconcerting sights. Suddenly, high in the sky, the enormous mass of the cathedral, before you the retaining walls of houses soar up to 20 meters, compact, red, with a very fine brick tone. Here everything is brick, a phantasmagoria of red tones, w**e red and mauve."
