Historical Background
2.1 Company History
The company was started by Mr Horatius Glave in 1973 offering building and infrastructure contractual services at Aluminium Partners of Jamaica Limited. With the eminent growth that the company was experiencing the focus changed, and the strategic mission reviewed. This review focus led to the organization offering services in structural, mechanical, civi
l engineering, equipment hireage and real estate development. As part of the strategic move, the company began to offer its services to both public and private sector. We are one the longest continuous construction company in existence to date.
2.2 Performance and Accomplishment
A history of the performance of the company is outlined as follows:
2.2.1Aluminium Partners of Jamaica (ALPART), (1976 -1990
We paved all the roads with asphaltic concrete within the plant, we also do
mechanical works and replacing of pipes plus repairs to the Port, Dome and
Hopper on the Wharf including other steel structures also the descaling of Tanks
2.2.2 Aluminium Partners of Jamaica Conveyor Belt (1980-1984
The construction of the Aluminium Partners of Jamaica (ALPART) conveyor belt
commenced in 1980. The conveyor belt extended over nine (9) miles and. stretched from South Manchester to Nain in St. The conveyor belt
consisted of three (3) distinct sections.
• There is the loading station at one end.
• An angle station which is situated in the middle (which aids in the slowing down of the belt as it goes down the uneven terrain)
• At the other end there is the unloading station.The unloading station is located in the plant. The main contractor involved in this project was Cable Belt & Company from The
United Kingdom. They provided the belts and other accessories for the entire
project. Paul & Howard Company located in the United States of America. were the main sub-contractors,they were fully responsible for the construction
work. The electrical contractor was Bill Johnson and Company out of Tokyo,
Japan. Paul & Howard Company awarded Glaves mid-island Heavy Equipment and
Construction Company the contract to do the earthwork and all the steelworks. In addition we were engaged in a management contract to supply technical,
foreman, skilled and unskilled labour force. Our work as sub-contractors. commenced along with the steelwork, at least three months before the project
actual started
. Upon completion of the earth works Paul & Howard Company started the
loading station. Approximately 20% into the construction of the loading station
Paul & Howard Company encountered difficulties with the labour force. As a
result of this Glaves Mid-island Company Ltd. was called in by them to
complete the project. We constructed the entire nine miles of the conveyor for the belt that transports
bauxite from the mines into plant,
Our contracts for this project lasted four and a half (4½) years. At the
conclusion of this project we were elated with our accomplishments. The job
was completed on target and within budget The management team,
members of staff and the workers on site did magnificently in executing the
task at hand. Based on these attributes we were recommended to the
Japanese Contractors in 1986 to assist with their project for the expansion of
the Caribbean Cement Company.
2.2.3 Caribbean Cement Company Expansion Project (1986-1989)
The main contractor for the project was Kajima Corporation from Tokyo Japan. Glaves Mid-island Heavy Equipment and Construction Company was one of
the sub-contractors. All the rebar works for the entire project was assigned to
us. The Caribbean Cement Company plant was upgraded from the use of oil to
coal. To facilitate this change, we had to construct a building made of gypsum. We also had to construct two (2) settlement basins. Glave’s Mid-island Heavy Equipment and Construction Company assisted with
the construction of the silo for the storage of the cement. We did all structural
works for the conveyor line leading from the plant to the silo and the wharf. WE
also installed pre-stress spans for the wharf. These are similar to those that are
used on bridges. The duration of this project was two and a half (2½) years.
2.2.4 Old Harbour By Pass Road Construction (2000)
The main contractor for this project was Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC). Glave’s Mid-island Heavy Equipment and Construction Company Limited was a sub-contractor on this project. Three bridges were erected by us namely; bridge # 32, bridge #76 and bridge #80. In addition, we did approximately 60% of the rebar work. The duration of this contract was six(6) months.
2.2.5 Rosemount and Bushy Park Sub-Division (2002)
This project is a joint venture between the Ministry of Housing and Glave’s Mid-island Heavy Equipment and Construction Company Limited. This project involves the preparation of serviced lots for residential construction. The infrastructural work that is now ongoing to facilitate the 244 lots includes:
• Laying of water pipes
• Installation of sewerage system
• Paved roads leading to each lot
• Installation of electricity supply
• Adequate drainage system
The duration of this project is estimated at 11 months.
2.2.6 Highway 2000 (Old Harbour to Kingston)
The company was engaged in the construction of several bridges and culverts on Highway 2000. The highway spans from Old Harbour to Kingston. The main contractor on the project is Bouygues Travaux Public. The work included:
• Installing reinforcing bars
• Concrete works
• Installing drainage pipes
• Gabion basket
• Backfilling
• Stone Pitching
The duration of this contract was for the next six months.
2.2.7 Other Accomplishments
The delivery of consistent, efficient, competent and professional services led to the Company’s recognition in the industry. As a result, the present Minister of Water and Housing recruited the company to help in its housing development projects. We have also worked with a number of private and public sector organizations. The following is an outline of all the numerous projects which the company was engaged in over the years. These include housing development, roads, government buildings and so on.
• 1979-1981 the company was involved in constructing housing units for Kaiser Bauxite Company as part of Kaiser’s resettlement program.
• The Gregory Park Post Office was constructed by us in 1989.
• The upgrading of roads in Yallahs, St Thomas in 1998.
• The construction of the Linstead Fire Station in St. Catherine in 1998.
• The er****on of the catchment for the community water supply in Lluidas Vale St. Catherine in 1999.
• Infrastructural work for water supply in Old Mount Diablo in 1999.
• The construction of Nanny Ville Community Centre in 1999
• During the year 2002 to 2003 the company did massive road repair across the island.
2.2.8 (2006- 2009) We build the Half Way Tree (HWT) Transportation Centre in Kingston, this project lasted for one (1) year, we also constructed three (3) major dams for Jamalco in Clarendon under Kier Construction
2.2.9 (2010 -2014) We build the West Kingston Power Plant Station
under Kier Construction also several Water Tanks project for the N W C under Kier Construction, presently we are constructing a large Warehouse for Kier Construction.
