As the holiday season continues, the Consumers Affairs Commission (CAC) is advising shoppers to not accept poorly documented cash register tapes instead of receipts.

Receipts must have the business' name, address, and contact info, as well as a description of the item bought.

Receipts ease the redress process, especially when goods are faulty or do not meet expectations.

"If you break it, you buy it!"

Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) Communications Director, Latoya Halstead, is advising consumers not to be deterred by signs such as ‘No Refund/No Exchange’ or ‘If you break it, you buy it’ over the holiday season.

“Those signs are exactly what they are – signs. They hold no power..."

She says the Consumer Protections Act states that if an item is bought and the consumer has an issue, the first step is for them to contact the vendor.

“After you have done that, the step that the vendor needs to take is to try to repair it. If they are unable to repair it, they need to exchange it. If they are unable to exchange it, they need to refund you your money..."
