Students learn how to weld.
They learn how to work with wood.
Once they become able to do something they couldn’t do before,
they naturally want to get better at it.
Every new skill they learn expands what they can do
and changes the way they see the world.
Thinking and learning in the classroom are important,
but sometimes, you just have to get your hands moving and give it a try.
There are so many things you can only understand by actually doing them.
Learn, fail, try again, and keep going.
That process keeps opening up their world.
Think less. Do more.
You’ll never know until you try.

Design begins again after demolition.
In renovation, removing a wall may reveal an old earthen surface. Opening a ceiling may uncover a beautiful beam that has been hidden for decades.
Demolition reveals things that drawings and surveys alone cannot show us.
Do we preserve them?
Hide them?
Repair them?
Or give them a new role?
Demolition is not simply about taking things apart.
It is also a way of reading the history of a building.
What we discover on site becomes part of the design.
This, too, is what I mean by architecture as an act of editing.

Echoes on the Rooftop

On the rooftop of an office building in Tenma, Osaka, there once stood the owner’s private residence, complete with a traditional Japanese garden. Even today, traces of that history remain in the form of carefully placed stones and mature plantings.
As the number of tenants in the building gradually declined, we envisioned transforming the rooftop into a place where people could once again gather and connect. By preserving and reusing the existing garden stones and introducing a new deck made from scaffolding planks, we created an open and welcoming space above the city.
The dialogue between old materials and new additions gives the rooftop a renewed purpose—a place where office workers and visitors can sit, relax, converse, and spend time together. While honoring the memories embedded in the site, the project has brought fresh energy and new activity back to the rooftop.

OFFSTRING +NATURATECTURE

or a concert by German double bassist Sebastian Gramss on the lawn of Nakanoshima in Osaka, we designed and built a large dome using standard construction framing materials.
Created as a one-night-only installation, the dome appeared for the concert and disappeared the following day. Its unexpected presence in the middle of the city transformed the familiar landscape and drew the attention of countless visitors.
Students, architects, garden designers, and craftspeople worked together throughout the construction process, turning the act of building into a shared and memorable experience. Even the late-night work sessions and meals together became part of the project’s spirit.
More than a venue, the dome itself became a performance—bringing people together through the process of making. On the night of the concert, architec

Design LOOP is a project that reinterprets reclaimed materials, existing resources, and the wisdom inherited through local traditions and culture, transforming them into new value.
In an era of resource shortages and rising material costs, we believe it is essential not only to create new things, but also to make use of the materials, techniques, and spatial knowledge that already exist around us.
Japan has a long tradition of sustainable craftsmanship rooted in the spirit of mottainai—a respect for resources and an aversion to waste. Practices such as rammed earth construction, kintsugi, sashiko, and sakiori embody this philosophy. These traditions are not merely forms of reuse; they are ways of carrying forward time, memory, and cultural knowledge while creating new value.
Through the circulation of both materials and wisdom, Design LOOP explores new approaches to design and space-making that foster meaningful connections between people.

trace

We designed the bakery sales space by reusing materials that still carry traces of the building’s former life as a traditional Japanese house.
Rather than inserting entirely new fixtures, the shelves and counters were carefully composed to reconnect with the aged materials and the atmosphere accumulated over time.
The textured plaster walls, the weathered ladder, and the dark-toned timber elements were preserved and integrated into the space, creating a calm setting with generous openness for displaying bread.
Soft light from the hanging bare bulbs gently reveals the shadows, textures, and patina of the materials, allowing memories of the old house to coexist with a new daily activity.
Instead of erasing the past through renovation, this project seeks to reinterpret the traces that remained and connect them to a new use and future.

In 2014, bamboo thinnings associated with the problem of neglected bamboo forests were re-edited not as mere waste materials, but as a medium connecting music and space, resulting in the creation of a dome-shaped concert venue made of bamboo.
The light and flexible bamboo structure resonated with the sound of the performance, becoming a temporary architecture that connected people, nature, and local resources.
Today, the architectural field faces growing issues such as construction waste and material shortages. In this context, it is becoming increasingly important to reconsider discarded materials not simply as “waste,” but as resources that can be re-edited and given new value through architecture and design.

BERANDA

We renovated the second-floor balcony of a small candy shop located in the Nakatsu Shopping Street in Osaka.
Traditional shopping streets in Japan often have plants spilling out into the alleys and a pleasantly chaotic atmosphere filled with traces of everyday life. We believe that this slightly cluttered and unpolished character is what makes these places feel comfortable and alive.
For this balcony renovation, we aimed to create a design that quietly blends into the streetscape rather than standing out.
At first glance, it may go unnoticed, but upon closer look, the details, materials, and craftsmanship reveal a subtle sense of beauty. It is an approach that seeks to become part of the background of the town itself.
Rather than completely transforming the place, the project gently adds a new layer to the history and atmosphere that the shopping street has built over time.

Mobility Architecture

As a form of mobile architecture, we designed and built a kitchen trailer based on an Airstream.
Unlike conventional architecture, the project required us to address challenges unique to a moving structure — including structural durability, waterproofing, weight balance, and resistance to vibration during travel.
Details that would normally work in fixed buildings could not simply be applied here.
Every aspect had to be reconsidered: a structure capable of withstanding movement and twisting while driving, exterior finishes exposed continuously to wind and rain, waterproof detailing, and the routing of equipment and plumbing systems.
At the same time, a mobile kitchen offers possibilities that conventional architecture cannot.
Because it can move freely and create places wherever people gather, we see it as another form of architecture — one that expands the role of space beyond permanence and location.
This project became an exploration of new
