TREE TOMATO FARMING CAN PUT MONEY IN YOUR POCKET

If you have been waiting for the right time to establish a citrus orchard, the approaching rainy season is a good opportunity to get your seedlings into the ground. Good moisture at planting helps young trees settle in and start developing their roots.

You Have Harvested Your Hass Avocados. Now Take Care of the Trees

One thing I always tell avocado farmers is this...

Harvesting is not the time to forget about your trees. It is actually the time to start preparing them for the next season.

After spending months looking after your Hass avocado trees and finally seeing those fruits leave the farm, don't just walk away and wait for the next harvest. Your trees need some attention too.

One of the most important things to do after harvest is pruning.

✂️ Why prune your Hass avocado trees after harvest?

As the tree grows, you will have branches that become crowded, weak, dry or unproductive. If you leave everything as it is, the canopy can become too dense.

Pruning helps you open up the tree so that light and air can pe*****te the canopy. It also makes it easier to spray, scout for pests and diseases, and harvest fruits in the future.

But remember, pruning does not mean cutting the tree anyhow.

🌿 How to prune your Hass avocado trees

1. Start with dead and diseased branches

Look through the tree carefully and remove branches that are dead, broken or showing signs of disease.

Cut them back to healthy wood and remove the pruned material from the orchard, especially if it is diseased.

2. Remove branches growing towards the inside

Look at the centre of your tree. If several branches are growing into each other or crossing, remove some of them.

The goal is to create a more open canopy rather than having branches competing for space.

3. Remove weak and badly positioned shoots

Some shoots grow from the lower trunk or from places where they don't contribute much to the productive structure of the tree. These can be removed.

Also watch out for vigorous upright shoots that overcrowd the canopy.

4. Remove branches that are rubbing against each other

Branches constantly rubbing together can become injured and create entry points for pests and diseases.

Remove the weaker or poorly positioned branch.

5. Don't over-prune

This is where many farmers go wrong.

You don't need to strip the tree bare just because harvesting is over. Avoid removing too much healthy productive wood at once.

A good tree should still have enough healthy foliage to support growth and recovery.

✂️ Use clean, sharp pruning tools

Before moving from one tree to another, especially when dealing with diseased branches, clean and disinfect your pruning tools. Make clean cuts instead of leaving torn or jagged wounds.

And please don't leave large piles of pruned branches under the trees. Remove them from the orchard and dispose of diseased material appropriately.

☀️ What do you gain from proper pruning?

A well-pruned avocado tree can have a more manageable canopy, better light pe*******on and improved air movement.

It can also make spraying and harvesting easier, reduce unnecessary overcrowding and encourage the tree to put its resources into useful new growth.

Most importantly, you are shaping the tree for the next production cycle.

🌱 After pruning, don't stop there

Your trees have just spent a lot of energy producing a crop. This is a good time to assess their general condition.

Check your soil fertility, water management, mulch, pest and disease situation and overall tree health. Don't apply fertiliser blindly. Base your nutrition programme on the needs of the orchard and, where possible, soil and leaf analysis.

And keep monitoring the trees. A problem noticed early is usually much easier to manage than one discovered when the next crop is already developing.

Think of it this way...

You wouldn't harvest your maize and leave the farm completely unattended until the next season. Your avocado orchard deserves the same attention.

‎Dragon fruit needs regular attention from the time it is planted. Start by keeping the farm clean and free from excessive w**ds so the plants do not compete for nutrients and moisture. Mulching around the plants can also help conserve moisture and improve soil condition.
‎
‎Then comes feeding the plants properly. Dragon fruit is a vigorous crop, and adequate nutrition supports healthy growth, flowering and fruit development. Instead of applying fertiliser blindly, it is better to understand what your soil and plants actually need.
‎
‎Pruning is another important job. Allowing too many shoots to grow can create a crowded canopy, making management difficult and reducing light and air movement. Select strong, healthy branches and remove unnecessary or weak growth. A well-managed plant is easier to inspect, spray and harvest.
