Right Tree in the Right Place

Available space is probably the consideration most overlooked or misunderstood when deciding what tree to plant. Before you plant, it is important to know what the tree will look like as it nears maturity. Consider its height, crown spread, and root space.

What is a Bare Root Perennial, Shrub or Tree?

MANY trees, shrubs and perennial are available as bare-root plants. Growers dig the plants while they're dormant, wash the soil from the roots, and surround the roots in moist packing material prior to shipping.

There are several benefits of purchasing bare-root vs. container-grown plants:
- Bare-root plants are usually less expensive.
- They often establish more quickly.
- You may find a larger selection, especially via mail order.

Keep bare root trees moist and cool until planting. Roots must stay moist until planting time. If roots are at all dry upon arrival, submerge the root ball in a bucket of water for about eight hours. Immediately upon receiving a bare root tree, I remove it from its packing to make sure the roots are still moist.
