The Green Belt Movement is proudly continuing our tree planting initiative at the Mileho site in North Nandi.

Working alongside the (AFD), we are thrilled to see local community members remain at the very heart of this restoration journey. Environmental conservation is only genuinely sustainable when local people take ownership of their landscapes. Their ongoing hard work, traditional knowledge, and passion are the driving forces making this project a success.

Together with the community, we keep restoring forests and securing a greener, more resilient tomorrow. 🌳

Yesterday marked an incredible milestone for The Green Belt Movement as we officially kicked off our land preparation efforts at the Mileho site in North Nandi.

In a powerful demonstration of community-led action and partnership with the , our incredible local workforce successfully dug 59,400 holes in preparation for our upcoming tree planting initiative.

Every single hole represents a commitment to the planet. At The Green Belt Movement , our mission is clear: we are restoring forests, reviving ecosystems, and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.

The current encroachment into sections of Uhuru Park and Central Park is not just a planning issue, it is a warning sign for Nairobi’s future.

As infrastructure expansion continues to take precedence over public green spaces, we are witnessing the gradual shrinking of some of the city’s most important environmental and recreational areas.

Nairobi already faces a serious shortage of accessible urban green spaces. These parks are more than open land; they help cool the city, improve air quality, support biodiversity, and provide space for recreation, reflection, and community connection.

When green spaces are sacrificed for road expansion and concrete development, the loss is permanent.

This is an ongoing encroachment, not a hypothetical threat. Boundaries are shifting, vegetation is being cleared, and public land is being repurposed in real time.

Infrastructure should not come at the cost of livability. A city designed only for vehicles and expansion, while neglecting nature, becomes hotter, less resilient, and less humane.
We can choose a different path. Development and conservation can coexist if public participation, environmental safeguards, and long-term urban planning are taken seriously.

We must protect Uhuru Park and Central Park before more of Nairobi’s green heritage disappears.

Uhuru Park and Central Park are at risk. The time to act is now.

Today, Kenyan citizens, environmental defenders, and human rights activists came together to stand for Nairobi National Park and demand transparency, accountability, and meaningful public participation.

We shall not relent in defending our environment, our public spaces, and our constitutional rights. Nairobi National Park is not for sale, and we will continue to speak out until its protection is guaranteed.

We join fellow environmental and human rights organizations in strongly condemning the arrest of nine peaceful protesters, including former Chief Justice David Maraga, and the violent dispersal of citizens peacefully advocating for the protection of Nairobi National Park.

The Green Belt Movement stands in solidarity with all those defending our environment, civic freedoms, and the constitutional right to public participation. The use of force, intimidation, and arrests against peaceful citizens raising legitimate concerns about the future of Nairobi National Park is unacceptable.

Nairobi National Park is a unique ecological heritage, a critical refuge for wildlife and biodiversity, and a public trust that must be protected for present and future generations. Decisions affecting protected public resources must be transparent, accountable, and subject to meaningful public participation.

We reiterate our position: Nairobi National Park is not for sale.

We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested, an end to the use of force against peaceful protesters, and full transparency regarding any proposals or plans affecting Nairobi National Park.

Protecting our environment and protecting fundamental freedoms are inseparable. Citizens must never be punished for defending either.

Today, we stood peacefully alongside and to defend from yet another threat.

A proposal to excise nearly 90 acres of protected land for a parking facility is not progress. It is a dangerous precedent.

Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world within a capital city. It is a global treasure, a biodiversity hotspot, and a critical wildlife corridor. Once lost, this land can never be replaced.

During the peaceful protest, 9 unarmed environmental and civic activists were forcefully arrested. Their only “crime” was standing up for nature, accountability, and the rule of law.

We refuse to accept the false choice between development and conservation. Kenya can build infrastructure without sacrificing protected ecosystems.

We stand in solidarity with the arrested activists and with every Kenyan fighting to protect our natural heritage.

This World Environment Day, we celebrate the power of nature to heal, restore and sustain life.

At the Green Belt Movement, we have long been inspired by nature’s ability to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Through tree growing, forest restoration, watershed protection and community empowerment, we work alongside communities to build climate resilience and secure a greener future for generations to come.

This year’s theme, Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future, reminds us that nature is one of our greatest allies in the fight against climate change. By protecting forests, restoring degraded landscapes and nurturing biodiversity, we invest not only in the health of our planet but also in the well-being of present and future generations.

Together, let us continue taking action for our climate and our future one tree, one community and one landscape at a time.
