When the ground shakes, the building's mass resists the movement (inertia), and every floor feels a force. This 2-minute animation works through it step by step:

📐 Example: 12-storey building, 200 t per floor, ground acceleration 0.15g = 1.47 m/s²

1️⃣ The ground accelerates and the floors lag behind (inertia) 2️⃣ Force on each floor: F = 200 × 1.47 = 294.3 kN 3️⃣ Base shear: V = 12 × 294.3 = 3 531.6 kN 4️⃣ Force directions: the ground pushes the building one way, and the inertia forces point the other way (3rd law) 5️⃣ Twice the shaking (0.30g): V = 7 063.2 kN 6️⃣ Half the mass (100 t per floor): V = 1 765.8 kN

📌 Takeaway: more mass or stronger shaking means larger earthquake forces. That's why lighter materials and stronger structures matter in seismic zones.
