자연과 인공, 그 사이의 떨림
자연과 인공은 오래도록 서로의 반대항으로 이해되어 왔다. 그러나 사람 역시 자연의 일부다. 따라서 둘은 분리된 실체라기보다 서로를 끊임없이 침투시키는 연속적인 흐름이다. 센트럴 파크는 그 긴장을 가장 선명하게 드러낸다. 우리는 그 안에서 자연을 경험한다고 느끼지만, 그 자연은 이미 설계된 질서 위에 놓여 있다. 도시의 마천루는 그 바깥에서 자연과 문명이 하나의 시야 안에 겹쳐진 장면을 만든다. 바람은 호수를 가로지르고, 빛은 유리와 잎의 표면을 동시에 통과한다. 자연과 도시는 서로를 대체하면서도 서로의 형태를 닮아간다. 나는 그 경계가 미세하게 어긋나는 순간에 머문다. 현실이 환상으로 미끄러지는 순간, 환상이 다시 현실의 표면을 갖는 순간. 그 짧은 균열 속에서 예술은 이미 시작되어 있다. - 임상빈, 『공원의 풍경: 인식의 정원』 중에서
Nature and Artifice, the Tremor Between Them
Nature and artifice have long been understood as opposites. Yet human beings are also part of nature. Therefore, rather than being separate entities, they are continuous flows that constantly permeate one another. Central Park reveals this tension with particular clarity. We feel that we are experiencing nature within it, yet that nature already rests upon a designed order. Beyond it, the city’s skyscrapers create a scene in which nature and civilization overlap within a single field of vision. The wind moves across the lake, while light passes through both glass and leaves at once. Nature and the city replace one another, yet gradually come to resemble each other. I dwell in those moments when that boundary subtly slips out of alignment. The moment when reality slips into fantasy, and the moment when fantasy once again takes on the surface of reality.
