전시의 제목 《POIESIS》는 이 오래 두는 마음에서 나왔다. 고대 그리스어 포이에시스는 없던 것을 있게 만드는 일, 즉 무에서 유가 생겨나는 순간을 뜻한다. 지금은 흔히 예술이나 제작이라는 좁은 뜻으로 쓰이지만, 원래는 더 넓은 뜻이었다. 씨앗이 흙을 뚫고 나와 꽃이 되는 일도, 몸이 시간을 지나며 다른 존재가 되어가는 일도 그리스인들은 모두 포이에시스라 불렀다. 이번 전시는 완성된 작품을 통해, 그 형상이 지금 이 모습이 되기까지 지나온 길을 함께 들여다보고자 한다.
권지영과 김소희는 서로 다른 재료를 쓰지만, 물질과 몸이 만나는 자리에서 만난다. 흙을 짓누르는 손, 화면 위를 거칠게 지나가는 붓. 두 사람의 작업 표면에는 다듬어지지 않은 물질의 흔적과 몸의 흔적이 그대로 남아 있다. 완성도보다 만드는 과정 자체를 소중히 여기는 태도가 느껴진다. 표면은 강해 보이지만, 그 아래에는 언제나 연약함이 함께 있다. 이 둘은 서로 반대되는 것이 아니라, 서로를 지탱해주는 관계에 가깝다.

The exhibition’s title, Poiesis, comes from this willingness to let things remain unresolved. In ancient Greek, poiesis names the act of bringing into being what did not exist before, the moment when something that was not there before comes into being. Today the word is often narrowed to mean art or making, but its original sense was far broader. The Greeks used poiesis to describe a seed breaking through soil to become a flower, or a body becoming something else through the accumulation of time. Through the finished works on view, this exhibition invites viewers to trace the path each form traveled to arrive at its present state.
Kwon Jiyoung and Kim Sohee work in different materials, but they meet at the point where matter and body come into contact. A hand pressing into clay. A brush moving roughly across canvas. On the surface of each artist’s work, the unrefined traces of both material and body remain visible, exactly as they were left. What comes through is a regard for the act of making itself, over and above polish or finish. The surface may look tough, but underneath it there is always something fragile. The two qualities are not opposites so much as conditions that sustain one another.
