Hedera helix is an evergreen climbing plant, growing to 20–30 m (66–98 ft) high where suitable surfaces (trees, cliffs, walls) are available, and also growing as groundcover where no vertical surfaces occur. It climbs by means of aerial rootlets with matted pads which cling strongly to the substrate. The ability to climb on surfaces varies with the plants variety and other factors: H. helix prefers non-reflective, darker and rough surfaces with near-neutral pH. It generally thrives in a wide range of soil pH with 6.5 being ideal, prefers moist, shady locations and avoids exposure to direct sunlight, the latter promoting drying out in winter.[4] The leaves are alternate, 50–100 mm (2–4 in) long, with a 15–20 mm (0.6–0.8 in) petiole; they are of two types, with palmately five-lobed juvenile leaves on creeping and climbing stems, and unlobed cordate adult leaves on fertile flowering stems exposed to full sun, usually high in the crowns of trees or the top of rock faces. The flowers are produced from late summer until late autumn, individually small, in 3-to-5 cm-diameter (1.2-to-2.0 in) umbels, greenish-yellow, and very rich in nectar, an important late autumn food source for bees and other insects. The fruit are purple-black to orange-yellow berries 6–8 mm (0.2–0.3 in) in diameter, ripening in late winter,[5] and are an important food source for many birds. One to five seeds are in each berry, which are dispersed after being eaten by birds.

හෙඩෙරා හෙලික්ස් යනු සදාහරිත කඳු නැගීමේ ශාකයකි. සුදුසු මතුපිට (ගස්, කඳු බෑවුම්, බිත්ති) ඇති ස්ථානවල මීටර් 20-30 (අඩි 66-98) දක්වා උසට වැඩෙන අතර සිරස් මතුපිටක් නොමැති ස්ථානවල බිම් ආවරණයක් ලෙසද වර්ධනය වේ. එය උපස්ථරයට තදින් ඇලී ඇති මැට් පෑඩ් සහිත ගුවන් මුල් මගින් නැඟී යයි. මතුපිටට නැගීමේ හැකියාව ශාක විවිධත්වය සහ අනෙකුත් සාධක අනුව වෙනස් වේ. හෙඩෙරා හෙලික්ස් උදාසීන pH අගයට ආසන්න පරාවර්තක නොවන, අඳුරු සහ රළු මතුපිට වලට වැඩි කැමැත්තක් දක්වයි. එය සාමාන්යයෙන් පුළුල් පරාසයක පසෙහි pH අගයක වර්ධනය වන අතර 6.5 කදිම වන අතර තෙතමනය සහිත, සෙවන සහිත ස්ථාන වලට වැඩි කැමැත්තක් දක්වන අතර සෘජු හිරු එළියට නිරාවරණය වීම වළක්වයි. දෙවැන්න ශීත ඍතුවේ දී වියළීම ප්රවර්ධනය කරයි.[4] කොළ විකල්ප, 50-100 mm (අඟල් 2–4) දිග, 15-20 mm පොල් බීඩංගයක් ඇත; ඒවා වර්ග දෙකකට අයත් වේ, බඩගා යන සහ නගින කඳන් මත තාලාකාර පස්-ලොබ් සහිත තරුණ කොළ සහ සාරවත් මල් පිපෙන කඳන් මත පෙති රහිත හෘද හැඩැති වැඩිහිටි කොළ, සාමාන්යයෙන් ගස්වල ඔටුනු හෝ පාෂාණ මුහුණු මුදුනේ ඉහළින් හිරු එළියට නිරාවරණය වේ. මල් ගිම්හානයේ අග භාගයේ සිට සරත් සමයේ අග භාගය දක්වා නිපදවනු ලැබේ, තනි තනිව කුඩා, විෂ්කම්භය 3-5 සෙ.මී. (අඟල් 1.2-2.0 සිට 1.2-2.0 දක්වා) කුඩ, කොළ පැහැති-කහ සහ මල් පැණි වලින් ඉතා පොහොසත්, මී මැස්සන් සහ අනෙකුත් කෘමීන් සඳහා වැදගත් සරත් සෘතුවේ අග භාගයේ ආහාර ප්රභවයකි. පලතුරු දම්-කළු සිට තැඹිලි-කහ බෙරි 6-8 mm (අඟල් 0.2-0.3) විෂ්කම්භයකින් යුක්ත වන අතර ශීත ඍතුවේ අග භාගයේ ඉදෙමින් පවතී, [5] සහ බොහෝ පක්ෂීන් සඳහා වැදගත් ආහාර ප්රභවයකි. සෑම බෙරියකම බීජ එකක් සිට පහක් දක්වා ඇති අතර ඒවා කුරුල්ලන් විසින් අනුභව කිරීමෙන් පසු විසුරුවා හරිනු ලැබේ.
