Haputale Villa by a-designstudio

Perched amidst the luscious hills and tea plantations of Haputale, The Haputale Villa sits on a terrain plot concealed within the boulders and tropical forests of the country. Harmoniously blending with nature, the building is layered with unifying links and access between minimalist rectangular volumes of spaces.
Strategically placed along the main axis, the elevated entrance of the lobby is designed to have framed views towards the mountain ranges.

Taken through the expansive central lobby space, one is greeted with a vast lap pool designed to provide a sense of serenity to the adjacent living spaces. A feeling of lightness is created by several methods: the organization of outdoor timber decks, passages with minimal columns across the villa, and panoramic windows. Hence, the main living and dining were made to be simple and concise with undisrupted views towards the forested setting.

Four spaciously designed suites are distributed along the longitudinal axis of the villa adjoining the 2 lap pools each with private viewing decks that extends into the forest. This placement enhances the bedrooms’ access point and frames the exterior, enabling an interplay of light and shadows of the luxuriant foliage.

To emulate the villa to the landscape, earthy colour tones were used for the interior to compliment the greenery that surrounds it. The natural timber fluted panels used in the bedroom with light speckled finished terrazzo flooring in the interior, and walnut-stained timber decks act as transitional links merging between the built and the landscape.
Arched openings ornate the passageways and control the infiltration of light into spaces, combining the rustic and sophisticated, generating an outlook that is both unique and delicate.
The serene atmosphere and lack of intrusiveness have been achieved by sensitive architectural techniques, proposing an intimate yet open and inviting retreat; obscured by the greenery of the context maintaining the fragile aura of light and tranquility of Haputale.

ADS AND MAD STUDIO EXPERIENCE

The near decade long enjoyable journey of a-designstudio has brought about many forms of innovative architecture and interior design spaces, whilst forming cohesive collaborations between creative individuals. The boutique company that comprised 2 work stations in 2012 has grown to house over 40 unique personalities forming its second design branch Mad at Design this year. The below feature is an exhibit of the 2 entities consisting of a-designstudio and Mad at Design, covering both the interior design and architectural sectors respectively in the field of construction.

The Studio situated in Colombo 5 consists of a steel glazed structure covering 4 working floors, methodically designed to create functional yet vibrant work spaces. Interiors were modelled to compliment the rustic open industrial form exhibited in the structural shell. The concrete floors, exposed steel beams and columns, and corrugated soffits are some of the key raw features highlighted in each floor. The overall material selected sets a contemporary tone, preserving natural textures, with a subtle introduction of colour.

The 2 studio floors which filled with natural foliage, comprising of architects, interior designers, Landscape architects, MEP and Structural consultants. The studio follows an open floor plan, eliminating the “cubicle work culture” mind-set, segregation, and exclusivity. In turn forming an atmosphere of free flowing ideas and easy collaboration between the creative individuals.

The scattered clusters of tall trees and shrubs are mindfully placed between work stations, lounge spaces, meeting spaces forming subtle screens of privacy.

The boardroom and library floor takes on a more minimalistic perspective where the finishes consists of gloss white floors, and pink carpet whilst maintaining the overall industrial appearance.

The amalgamation of the cluster lounge seating and the library placed in between the meeting-rooms create a breakaway space adding to the overall informal sense of style throughout the floors.

The physical models of architectural forms are methodically placed throughout the working floors, expressing the nature of work carried out by the studio.

The design identity and the ambiance of the studio is a clear reflection on the informal setting created by the individuals housing the space.

The gender neutral tone and vibrant work ambiance, the free spirited mind set, and the creative overflow within the studio, is the ultimate setting for an inspiring work atmosphere.

The Garden Pavilion by a-designstudio

Situated amidst a primly manicured 45 perch land, set away from the urbanized city of Colombo is the open space Garden Pavilion. The built footprint consists of an open living, dining, and pantry area with encapsulating views overlooking the luscious garden, whilst the glass-enclosed bedroom is provided with scenic views of the slender lap pool and green backdrop.

The expansive open-air living and dining spaces are curated to optimize the scenic views of the garden, whilst the body of water that spreads the length of the pavilion further enhances the picturesque setting.

The passage leading up to the master bedroom and washroom is treated with narrow pivoting full-length timber panels, which brings in light whilst creating subtle views of the flora beyond. The washroom is fitted with modern equipment and a spacious bathtub capturing the surrounding.

Whilst the structure lays on a concrete plinth, the pavilion employs the use of terra cotta 3D tiles as a feature exterior cladding that blends in with its surrounding. The pavilion’s pitched roof finished with roman roof tiles is held by dual steel columns and encompasses a traditional Sri Lankan architectural style whilst the linear bedroom block extends towards the garden in a perpendicular manner. The roof shape acts as a means of shade to the interior, however inviting an abundant flow of natural light to the spaces.

The finishing material of the pavilion consists of natural terra cotta floor tiles, exposed rough cut cement surfaces, terra cotta wall tiles, wrought iron details, teak timber, merging and complimenting the green atmosphere.

The vast open feel of the bedroom is minimally furnished, with a natural rattan-cladded bed, low bedside tables, a built-in wardrobe, and a slender study table that converts into a TV stand. An accent chair and a complimenting footstool are placed close to the fully glazed façade encapsulating the vast view of the garden. The finishes on the interior continue from the living area to the bedroom unifying elements between the spaces.

The immaculately chosen finishes and the architectural setting of the pavilion cultivates a Zen mindset whilst creating a calm amalgamation of material and spatial imagination.

Homelands Office Interiors by a-designstudio

Located in the suburbs of Colombo city, Home Lands Head Office is a 4-storey office building, equipped with cutting–edge technologies, a fully automated interactive boardroom, luxury office suites, customer interaction spaces, breakout spaces, and conference rooms. The office complex is designed to have multiple split levels connecting each space visually.

On entry, the ground level is composed of an expansive double-height reception accompanied by a visitors seating area adorned with alabaster backlit panels and timber veneer walls. Custom lighting fixtures with neutral general lighting embellish the entirety of the interior. The subtle warm interior through the amalgamation of timber, marble, and leather is the design language that follows through each space of the building. In order to differentiate the hierarchy of space, materiality was skillfully used for the Executive office suites while keeping the earthy colour tones and design language intact.

The deck level accommodates breakout and customer interactions spaces that overlook the main reception. Timber trellises are used as a recurring design element that patterns the white interiors to bring in contrast and identity.

The upper floors accommodate all private office spaces and the boardroom. The Managing Director’s office suite is designed to house various formal and informal seating arrangements overlooking the central conference table and library. Additionally, the fully automated interactive 40-seater boardroom with custom furniture and lighting is the pinnacle of the design.

Minimal yet modern in nature, each space of this office building emphasizes the intricate, high-end product that Home Lands envisioned to serve its customers.
