Lalin Design Lalin Michael Jinasena is an award-winning Designer by profession, specializing in interior and furniture design.

Lalin’s design career has progressed from interior design on independent projects to the conceptualization interior design, for both small and large-scale commercial and residential buildings. He coupled this passion with his background in hotel management to create Casa Colombo, a 12 suite designer hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Casa Colombo has won numerous awards from around the world, including the award for ‘Best Design Boutique Hotel in the World 2013’.

A little known fact - 19 years ago to date, the hotel i had just designed and opened, Casa Colombo, was featured in WALLPAPER magazine.

Wallpaper is considered the bible for designers, and as a design student in England it was THE magazine I read and revered showcasing the epitome of design around the world. Seeing my hotel and my name in this magazine was one of my life's greatest and most humbling moments.

Casa Colombo went on to be featured in a whole host of leading design and travel publications thereafter, and won numerous awards, including the Best Design Boutique Hotel in the World.

My advice - follow your heart, you never know how real your dreams can become.

Presenting the 'Levitating Tree Coffee Table'.

Conceptualised by Lalin who saw something beautiful hidden within a discarded tree trunk. He had the root of the trunk cut, and with the help of skilled carpenters, they managed to peel back layers of it to reveal intricately shaped and naturally fascinating features. Once the bark was removed, the undulating curves and facets of nature make this coffee table a true marvel.

The tree's naturally hollowed out and darkened core was further enhanced by cutting the log into a two stepped table, which incidentally enables the lower section to be the shelf for books, while the upper level is perfect for drinks.

Designed to be light weight, the inside of the log was bored out, making it easily maneuverable.

Most significantly he designed it in such a way that the coffee table appears from all around to be levitating off the ground, defying gravity.

The geometrical parallels of the space, are broken by the naturally undulating curves of this unusual coffee table, giving it a pride of place as the center piece of this living room.
