We start with sound - or maybe with space.
Design in Conversation kicks off with an unexpected pairing: Architect Philip Weeraratne and electronic music producer Dimuth K, a key figure in Sri Lanka’s electronic music scene taking his roots to international platforms. Two creatives operating in different mediums but chasing the same thing: atmosphere.
From the evolution of EDM, rave culture, and its unexpected parallels with architecture, unpack rhythm, energy, and how culture shapes the spaces we move through.
Plug in. Step inside the conversation.

A Rs. 4 billion hospitality investment in Ella, this 60-key development marks a significant step in strengthening Sri Lanka’s evolving tourism landscape. Conceived as a joint venture between Belluna Lanka Ltd. and Sanken Overseas Ltd., the project reflects long-term confidence in the country’s regional growth and destination-led development strategy.
Architectural design is led by PWA Architects, under the direction of Archt. Philip Weeraratne, together with Archt. Ravindu Karunanayake and Archt. Gayan Karunaratne, continuing a longstanding collaboration rooted in contextual sensitivity and disciplined scale. Positioned in close proximity to Ella Town and its railway station, the project reinforces the integral relationship between location, landscape, and sustainable hospitality — contributing meaningfully to the future of Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
At Thai Boulevard, Queens Road, Colombo, the interior unfolds as a layered composition of texture and light. Led by Inushi Wanduragala alongside Pranavan Rockwood, with assistance from Kanchini Chandrasiri under the guidance of Archt. Philip Weeraratne, the project brings together materiality and atmosphere in a refined, contemporary Thai setting.
Exposed beams, soft golden illumination, and curated Thai artwork shape a space that feels warm, grounded, and thoughtfully detailed. The long dining layout, framed by cane-backed chairs and clean-lined tables, encourages connection, while natural light filtering through glass balances the richness of the wood and earth-toned palette.
A space where design and dining meet seamlessly.
A heartfelt thank you to Chamindri Wijemanne and Suranjith Fonseka for their vision and collaboration throughout this journey. Their confidence in the team and drive for excellence encouraged us to step outside our safe limits and refine the project into something truly distinctive.

Led by Inushi Wanduragala alongside Pranavan Rockwood, with assistance from Kanchini Chandrasiri under the guidance of Archt. Philip Weeraratne, the space reflects a refined and contemporary Thai aesthetic.

Mural-lined walls add depth and narrative, transforming the dining area into an immersive experience that feels both intimate and elevated — a setting designed to slow you down and savour the moment.
Our sincere gratitude to Chamindri Wijemanne and Suranjith Fonseka for their trust and continued encouragement. As inspiring and motivating clients, they pushed us beyond our comfort zones and challenged us to think more boldly, allowing the design to evolve to its fullest potential.

Set along Union Place, this project is a contemporary response to its urban context, shaped by climate, scale, and restraint. The project was led by Archt. Ravindu Karunanayake, alongside Archt. Gayan Karunarathne, with support from Mohamed Resath and Dharman Muthukumarana under the overall guidance of Archt. Philip Weeraratne.
One of the first highrise projects to be completed with a complete Sri Lankan team of consultants and builders. The design balances modern architectural expression with the existing city fabric.
Layered facades, deep overhangs, and integrated greenery soften the building’s presence while responding to light and the tropical climate. More than a standalone structure, the project contributes quietly to the evolving character and everyday rhythm of Union Place.

Malaka has been part of PWA for many years, growing through hands-on experience, trust, and the freedom to learn by doing. Hailing from a simple background in Bentota, and without a formal education in architecture, he embraced the discipline through experience, learning to navigate its complexity and the expectations of sophisticated clients. PWA gave him the space to explore, adapt, and flourish, and he's made the most of every opportunity.
He leads by example, with a strong belief in the value of experience. This is reflected in the small, close-knit team he has built around him, where trust, collaboration, and shared purpose define their work.
PWA is shaped by individuals who lead with purpose and bring others forward, and Malaka’s contribution reflects the very best of that spirit.

The One Weligama is a private beachfront villa, conceived under the direction of Archt. Philip Weeraratne, with the design led by Malaka Andradi and assisted by Chathuranga Hewapathirana. Combining timber, terrazzo, cement plaster, and brushed metal, the villa’s architecture embraces material honesty with raw, exposed concrete slabs and minimalist form that opens entirely to the sea. The interior seamlessly blends with the natural landscape, with open-plan living spaces, framed ocean views, and deep overhangs that invite light and air into the home. The rooftop plunge pool and verandah offer intimate spaces for reflection and retreat, while carefully curated furnishings and natural textures create a tranquil atmosphere. Thoughtful design decisions like the central courtyards and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions offer a serene living experience that harmonizes with the environment, creating a timeless retreat that balances simplicity and luxury.

PWA is an architectural and design firm in Sri Lanka, made up of highly creative and talented architects. We specialize in architectural, interior and furniture design. We have acquired extensive professional expertise designing simple, advanced, complex and iconic buildings regardless of its size, context or scope.
Each PWA project provides a new beginning and is the result of an in-depth and meticulous design process. The approach we take on every job is considered a unique challenge and an exciting opportunity to transform the architectural design into a transcending reality. Our ambition is simple; to develop the most efficient and dynamic buildings and modern home design, be it residential, commercial or recreational including restaurants, villas, spas, resorts and hotels. We listen to our client at the start of the process, understanding their needs and aspirations on house design, but not limiting ourselves to the brief. Instead, we aim to produce design-led solutions which are tailor made to visualize their context which were unable to be expressed in mere words.
We draw on our extensive knowledge and expertise in order to translate modern house designs into reality. We embrace each element, be it creation, construction or performance. We predominantly feature materials and textures including fire, wind, water, sand, stone and timber in our designs. We aim to create emotional and visual sensations within the user’s mind, by manipulating the space which flows from the inside to the outside combining both shade and light. Our house designs aim to deliver buildings which are visually compelling and functionally efficient. Modern house plans make modern living easier and more appealing than ever before.
We offer a full range of comprehensive consultancy services provided by a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary group of designers. Our services include project evaluation, total design services, solutions and project administration. With various features and sizes to choose from, our tailor made modern house plans will cater to your own individual tastes. We pay attention to detail which ensures the company policy is in play by finalizing each project as per the allocated time and budget. For us, architecture is a journey rather than a conceptual exercise.
