Proposed Additions and Alterations to the Existing House and Conversion into a Villa at Ahangama

The proposed additions and alterations to the existing house, together with its conversion into a villa, form the first phase of the master plan for a unit villa development.

The architectural concept adopts a Tropical Modern approach, preserving the existing tropical character while introducing contemporary design elements and improved functionality. The existing house will be retained and enhanced to serve as the central component of the overall master plan, providing a cohesive connection to the future villa units.

Designed to meet the client's vision of a first-floor homestay, this project features an open ground floor that seamlessly connects with the surrounding landscape. With an estimated construction cost of LKR 32 million, the design includes two bedrooms, a study area, and two bathrooms. The architecture is driven by a simple, elegant, and contemporary tropical form with a steel structure.

PROPOSED LODGE & HOSTEL | RUMASSALA, GALLE

Rather than becoming the destination, the architecture serves as a quiet transition preparing the body and mind for the extraordinary landscape of Rumassala.

Interpriting the principles of Zen architecture, the design embraces simplicity, emptiness (Ma), and a deep connection with mind. Rather than imposing itself on the landscape, the building creates spaces for pause, reflection, and heightened awareness.

Through framed views, shifting light, natural ventilation, and moments of stillness, the architecture gently reconnects guests with their surroundings. Natural materials are allowed to age gracefully, celebrating authenticity, imperfection, and the passage of time. The architecture remains humble, inviting visitors to slow down, leave behind the rhythm of everyday life, and experience the mystery and serenity of Rumassala's coastal jungle.
