Steps for Measuring Slump in Concrete
1. **Gather Materials**:
- Slump cone (also known as an Abrams cone)
- Tamping rod (typically 5/8 inch in diameter)
- Base plate (flat, level surface)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Water and concrete sample
2. **Prepare the Slump Cone**:
- Place the slump cone upside down on a flat, level surface.
- Ensure that the inside of the cone is clean and free of debris.
3. **Fill the Cone with Concrete**:
- Lift the cone and place it on the base plate.
- Fill the cone with the concrete sample in three layers.
- Each layer should be approximately one-third of the cone's height.
- Use the tamping rod to compact each layer with 25 strokes, distributing the strokes evenly.
4. **Level the Top of the Cone**:
- After the third layer, use the tamping rod to strike off the excess concrete at the top of the cone, levelling it off.
5. **Remove the Cone**:
- Carefully lift the cone straight, without twisting it, to avoid disturbing the concrete.
6. **Measure the Slump**:
- Immediately after the cone is lifted, measure the distance from the top of the cone to the highest point of the slumped concrete.
- This measurement is the slump, typically reported in inches or millimetres.
7. **Repeat for Accuracy**:
- It’s essential to perform the test multiple times (generally three) to ensure consistent results.
8. **Record Results**:
- Document your findings, including the slump measurement and any observations regarding the concrete's workability.
