Embankment Dam සහ Piping

Embankment Dam (පස් බැම්ම) සැලසුම් කරන විට, පස් තෝරාගැනීම සහ බැම්මේ හැඩය නිර්මාණය කරන්නේ ජලය පස තුළින් ගලා යාමෙන් ඇතිවන හානි අවම කිරීමට හෝ සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම වැළැක්වීමට ය.

ජලය වැඩි පීඩනයකින් (High Hydraulic Gradient) පස තුළින් ගලා ගියහොත්, පස හොඳින් compact කර නොමැති නම්, අභ්‍යන්තර ඛාදනය (Internal Erosion) සිදුවීමට හැකියාව තිබේ. මෙම ඛාදනය නිසා පස් අංශු ජලය සමඟ ගසාගෙන යාම සිදුවේ.
එවිට බැම්ම ඇතුළත හිස් ජල මාර්ග (channels) හෝ නාළ වැනි හිස් අවකාශ (pipes) සෑදීම සිදුවේ.
මෙමගින් බැම්මේ ශක්තිය සහ ස්ථායීතාව (stability) අඩු කරයි. මෙම ආකාරයේ අභ්‍යන්තර ඛාදනය Piping ලෙස හැඳින්වේ.

Central Core සහ Chimney Drain

Embankment Dam එකක ජලය පස තුළින් ගලා යාම (seepage) අඩු කිරීම සදහා අඩු permeability (ජලය අඩුවෙන් ගමන් කරන) පස් වලින් Central Core (මැද හරය) සෑදීම කරනු ලබයි.

Central Core එකේ ප්‍රධාන කාර්යය වන්නේ පස් බැම්ම හරහා ජලය ගලා යන ප්‍රමාණය අඩු කිරීමයි. ජල පීඩනයේ (Total Head) වැඩි කොටසක් මෙම Core එක තුළදීම අඩුවේ. Core එක ඉතා පටු නම් Hydraulic Gradient ඉතා වැඩි වේ. මෙහිදී ඇතිවිය හැකි අවදානම වන්නේ Core එක සහ එයට යාබද වැඩි permeability ඇති පස් අතර සීමාවෙන් (boundary) ජලය පිටවන විට,
අභ්‍යන්තර ඛාදනය (Erosion) හෝ Piping ඇති වීමයි. මෙම ගැටලුව වැළැක්වීමට Core එකේ පහළ (downstream) පැත්තේ Chimney Drain එකක් සවි කරනු ලැබේ.

මෙම Chimney Drain එකේ කාර්යයන් වන්නේ Filter එකක් ලෙස ක්‍රියා කර පස් අංශු ගසාගෙන යාම නවතාලීම, ජලය ආරක්ෂිතව පිටතට ගෙන යාම, බැම්මේ පහළ පැත්ත (downstream slope) වියළි (unsaturated) තත්ත්වයේ තබා ගැනීම සහ Piping සහ Internal Erosion ඇතිවීම වැළැක්වීමයි.

Capillary Rise සහ Soil Suction

Capillary Rise යනු Water Table එකේ සිට ඉහළට ජලය පස් තුළ ඇති කුඩා හිස් අවකාශ (pores) හරහා ඉහළට නැඟීමයි.

පස් තුළ ඇති කුඩා හිස් අවකාශ (pores) එකිනෙකට වෙනස් ප්‍රමාණවලින් ඇති නිසා ජලය ඉහළට නැඟෙන උස සෑම තැනකදීම එක සමාන නොවේ. එම නිසා Capillary Rise එක තැනින් තැනට අසමාන (irregular) වේ.

Capillary Zone එක තුළ පහළ කොටස ජලයෙන් බොහෝ දුරට පිරී (almost saturated) තිබිය හැක.
නමුත් ඉහළට යන තරමට ජල ප්‍රමාණය අඩුවන නිසා පස ජලයෙන් සන්තෘප්තවීම (saturation) ද අඩුවේ.

වැසි ජලය වැනි ජලය පස මතුපිටින් Water Table එක දෙසට ගලා යන විට, ජලයේ කොටසක් පස් අංශු එකිනෙක ස්පර්ශ වන ස්ථාන වටා රැඳී සිටිය හැක. මෙය (Surface Tension) මතුපිට ආතතිය නිසා සිදුවේ.

පස් ආකර්ෂණ බලය (Soil Suction)
Water Table එකට ඉහළින් රැඳී ඇති ජලයට Negative Pressure (ඍණ පීඩනය) ඇති වීම සිදුවේ. මෙම ඍණ පීඩනය පස් අංශු එකිනෙකට ඇද ගන්නා බලයක් ඇති කරනු ලබයි. මෙම ආකර්ෂණ බලය Soil Suction ලෙස හැඳින්වේ.

Soil Suction සඳහා Pore Size (හිස් අවකාශවල ප්‍රමාණය) සහ Water Content (ජල ප්‍රමාණය) යන කරුණු බලපානු ලබයි.
