The Paddock Club - Café & Lounge - Interior

Location: Kohuwala, Sri Lanka
Project Type: Café & Lounge
Project Duration: 9 months
Completion: December 2024
Site Area: 18 perches
Built Area: 120 Sq.m
Materials Used: Steel, Zn/Al panels, Glass, Brick, Reinforced Concrete (RCC)

The Paddock Club Café & Lounge, located in Kohuwala, Sri Lanka, transforms the excitement of motorsports into an immersive dining and social experience. Designed as both a café and a hub for racing enthusiasts, this space combines the thrill of the racetrack with a community-focused atmosphere.

A defining feature of The Paddock Club is its bold use of racing red, which serves as the visual centerpiece of the design. This vibrant hue is applied across key structural elements, including railings, table edges, and panels, creating an energetic, dynamic environment. Racing red infuses the space with movement and intensity, evoking the speed and precision of high-performance race cars. Its strategic placement throughout the café reinforces the motorsport theme, offering visual excitement and a sense of continuous motion.

Beyond its striking color, the interior design embraces the aesthetics of sports vehicle interiors, with a material palette of steel, glass, synthetic leather, boards, and laminates. These elements evoke the rugged charm of race paddocks while adding depth and texture to the space. The combination of these durable materials ensures that the café remains resilient, just as racing infrastructure endures the demands of high-speed competition. The contrast between the materials and the bold racing red creates a sophisticated yet energetic atmosphere.

The interior design further emphasizes movement and interaction. Custom-designed seating, furniture, and features inspired by race car cockpits create an ergonomic and thrilling atmosphere. The layout accommodates multiple functions within a cohesive, adaptable space. The main dining area and lounge are complemented by a semi-outdoor section on the upper level, while the ground floor features the ‘barista’ and ordering station, allowing guests to enjoy both enclosed and open-air settings. This flexibility enhances the experience for diverse occasions. Racing red accents in furniture and seating on both floors guide the transition between spaces, maintaining a dynamic flow throughout the café.
A standout feature of The Paddock Club is its first-floor sim racing lounge. This exclusive zone immerses guests in high-speed racing simulations, reinforcing the café’s interactive and experiential appeal. Racing red continues to dominate the space, ensuring the theme remains cohesive across all areas.

A creatively repurposed sports car bumper serves as a focal point and unique lounge seating, drawing visitors into the motorsport experience. High leaner dining tables, formed with a slender steel framework and scaffolding platform plates, are another key element that resonates with the concept of continuous movement. Alloy wheels and steel wheels are assembled to feature the coffee tables and handwashing sinks. Checkered-flag motifs and live race displays complete the immersive experience, with racing red continuing to serve as the unifying visual thread.

Task lights, suspended leaner lights, tracked adjustable spotlights, and feature decorative lights are used in warm white color temperatures to generate the desired aesthetics in dedicated activity zones. Porcelain tile floor finishes are used on the ground floor, while carpets, combined with vinyl strip flooring, complete the upper-level floor finishes in the simulator racing, dining, lounge, and office areas. An epoxy application in appropriate colors is used on the covered outdoor terrace to withstand regular wear and tear. The upper floor is covered with composite boards made out of silica & cement, which act as the ceiling on a steel grid framing on the ground floor. The continuous angled formation of the roof profile is retained for the upper-level interior with a Zn/Al box-corrugated profiled ceiling in matte black.
The Paddock Club Café & Lounge redefines the café experience, offering a bold fusion of motorsport-inspired design and social connectivity. Through its innovative use of racing red, the space celebrates speed, style, and community, creating an unforgettable environment for visitors.

Project Duration: 9 months
Completion: December 2024
Site Area: 18 perches
Built Area: 120 Sq.m

The Paddock Club Café & Lounge, located in the vibrant heart of Kohuwala, Sri Lanka, redefines commercial architecture by seamlessly merging motorsport aesthetics with urban dynamism. Designed as a social hub for both racing enthusiasts and the wider community, the café stands as a landmark that celebrates speed, precision, and passion while fostering a unique social experience.
At the core of the design philosophy is the fusion of industrial materials with high-performance aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from the aerodynamic geometry of race cars, the architecture features sharp angular cuts, layered volumes, and bold paneling that evoke a sense of motion and power. The material palette, predominantly consisting of steel, Zn/Al panels, and glass with exposed bricks, envelops the superstructure, while reinforced cement concrete molds the base of the structure, ensuring both durability and an industrial yet refined exterior—embodying the resilience and precision of racing culture.
A defining aspect of the design is the powerful use of racing red. This bold color slices through the façade in vertical paneling, mimicking the streak of a speeding car. Racing red extends beyond the exterior, accenting key structural elements such as frames, railings, and paneling, reinforcing the theme of speed and movement. It contrasts strikingly with matte black and white cladding, enhancing the design’s dynamic visual impact while grounding it with sophistication and edge. Racing red serves not only as a visual focal point but also as a metaphor for the high-speed intensity of motorsport.
Inside, the theme of movement continues, immersing visitors in a motorsport-inspired world. Custom-designed seating, furniture, and features inspired by race car cockpits create an ergonomic and thrilling atmosphere. The layout accommodates multiple functions within a cohesive, adaptable space. The main dining area and lounge are complemented by a semi-outdoor section at the upper level, while the ground floor features the barista counter and ordering station, allowing guests to enjoy both enclosed and open-air settings, enhancing the experience for diverse occasions.
A standout feature is the simulator racing zone, housed in the cantilevered cube, where guests can engage in virtual motorsport experiences, further reinforcing the theme of speed and precision. The café also includes a well-appointed kitchen and cloakrooms, ensuring consistency in aesthetic design throughout the space.
The café’s connection to the outdoors is intentional, with dedicated parking and performance areas for sports cars and motorcycles. This creates an interactive environment where visitors can engage with the motorsport community.
The strategic positioning of the building within the site generates an island effect, with the immediate context providing dynamic perspectives from the exterior and offering unique vantage points at every level, harmonizing the urban dialogue.
The Paddock Club is more than just a café; it’s a destination for celebration and a space where the taste of food and beverages stimulates a passion for racing.
Through bold color, cutting-edge design, and an engaging layout, it pushes the boundaries of commercial architecture and sets a new benchmark for motorsport-inspired hospitality.
