On Saturday 26th of October 2024 our office was awarded the Philippe Rotthier Prize of Architecture for 2 of our projects.

The prestigious European Prize of Architecture Philippe Rotthier, created in 1982, rewards works of collective and cultural value, rooted in their region, using natural materials in a durable way, drawing on the genius of the European city in dialogue with the past and history.

The CIVIC ARCHITECTURE PRIZE was awarded to the « Extension of the Town Hall of Koerich » (Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg)

NOMINATED - Conversion and extension of an artist’s home, Clausen district, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

We are a Luxembourg-based architecture practice and the two buildings in question were built in Luxembourg in recent years.

Residential Complex "Poeppelbaach" in Osweiler

Set of houses with the possibility of creating "live-work units" for trade or for liberal professions, organized around a triangular space.

Urbanism and architecture are based on respect for the place, on its topographic reality and on its landscape and environmental qualities, inspired by the irregular sets that define and close the public domain in traditional ensembles.

This project is a good illustration that AAA certification does not impose an architectural style, but it is simply an energy performance.

Here we have shown that it is possible to achieve regulatory values by using a traditional architecture and building with natural materials without the use of insulating facades.

To be truly sustainable, a building must remain desirable with the passage of time.

The use of strong and durable materials for construction reduces the need for maintenance, unlike the synthetic or sometimes experimental materials that are commonly used.

The client decided to embark on this project to show that it was possible to offer charming places to live in, even with the constraints of current energy classifications.

This house was completed in 2022.

It is an extension of an existing house built in 1974 in Luxembourg city. The existing house was very small and not very comfortable to live in, as all the bedrooms were housed within the pitched roof, not leaving much usable space, especially considering the fact that the clients had a child and another on the way.
The house was therefore extended extensively, giving the now family of 5 lots of space to comfortably live in.

The style of the house has also been updated and now looks more timeless and high-end, while still keeping the existing structure, but integrating and blending it into the new scheme.

In 1989 a competition was held for the development of the Place de l'Etoile in Luxembourg. The project was, however, scrapped and a new project was published in september 2020.

Mulhern & Steil had submitted a project back in 1989, which had won the 1st round, but been eliminated quickly in the second round of the competition.
The architects of the jury told politicians that it would be less attractive to serious developers. In reality, and as is so often the case, he wanted to ensure that the award-winning project was modernist in style.

The Mulhern & Steil project proposed a welcoming approach by marking the west entrance with two symmetrical buildings formalizing a sort of gateway to the city.

A public park was developed for the office workers to enjoy during lunch and for residents in evenings and weekends was one of the main assets of the project. The buildings surrounding the park were erected on a pedestal wall housing the covered parking and recalling the defensive walls of the city of Luxembourg.

The Place de l'Etoile, a vehicular crossroads, was formalized by the pavement and an obelisk, as well as by the geometric shape and receding of the new buildings surrounding the square. While a pedestrian square on the south side was intended to receive terraces of restaurants and cafes and to give air in the corner opposite to the public park.

"Eecherschmelz" Competition in Luxembourg

This competition for the development of the former site of the Société des Forges d'Eich in Luxembourg in 1989 was the first competition that brought together Lucien Steil and Colum Mulhern, and which ultimately gave birth to their architectural firm.

The project received the 3rd prize.

This competition entry was to be built on the former iron factory in the Eich quarter of Luxembourg City. The footprint of our proposal was largely based on said factory and included apartments, a large number of which was social housing, undergrounb car parking for all its inhabitants, shops and businesses around a public plaza, offices, a community centre, a daycare centre, a large basin of water and the whole site was dotted with green spaces and parkland.
