Kotor APSS

Kotor APSS APSS Institut
research.education.cities.architecture It is located in Kotor, UNESCO site on the coast of Adriatic sea.

KotorAPSS - The Architecture Prison Summer School, named after the mothership of KotorAPSS – an Old Austrian prison building, seeks to redefine the approach on urban planning and design in the region. Since 2012 Kotor APSS has attracted thinkers and architecture scholars from all over the world and involved them not only in educating future architects of the Balkan region but also in forcing commu

nication and public discussions with the intention to spark change on many levels. Every year KotorAPSS gathers architects, designers, students and other visitors through various events. It stands out as the most important architectural event in Montenegro and one of the most significant in the region. Through the past workshops and symposiums, KotorAPSS hosted about 60 lecturers and among them some of the most important contemporary architects of today, while the workshops have been attended by students from 16 countries. For four years now the focus of KotorAPSS has been RE-USE and many research projects have been done, which eventually resulted in the creation of a Montenegrin pavilion at the XIV International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, and whose authors were KotorAPSS residents. The pavilion treated neglected modernistic buildings in need of RE-USE and after 3 years this has resulted with the project of Dom Revolucije in Nikšić, that will start with the construction right away and will be featured in Chicago Biennale in September this year. In 2016, KotorAPSS hosted two symposiums: RE-USE and THE DEBATE – the final symposium of the Solana Project – Montenegrin Pavilion at XV International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. The book RE-USE-ISM that sums up all the KotorAPSS projects will be presented in DOCOMOMO 2018 conference in Ljubljana. After the RE-USE series in KotorAPSS, we continue our journey with the topic of TEMPORARY in architecture - we have decided to break up with the permanence and talk about its significance in architecture.”

We’re proud to share that our project APSS VRANJINA: Living Waterfronts has been selected for the Connect NEB 2026 programme, as part of the Community New European Bauhaus.

APSS VRANJINA: Living Waterfronts is one of only eight projects across Europe selected to receive EIT Community NEB support in 2026.

Through this programme, we join a growing network of citizen-led initiatives across Europe, bringing the New European Bauhaus to life through local action — shaping more sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful places.

APSS VRANJINA: Living Waterfronts is a community-led research and design initiative for a living waterfront in Vranjina, connecting nature, heritage, and public life.

Looking forward to learning, connecting, and contributing alongside an inspiring cohort.
