A Contemporary Two-Storey Residence on a 40′ × 60′ Urban Plot

Set within a 40′ × 60′ land parcel, this two-storey residential building is conceived as a balanced response to urban density, family life, and climatic comfort. The design combines functional planning clarity with a calm architectural language, allowing everyday domestic activities to unfold naturally while maintaining spatial dignity and visual harmony.

Architectural Concept and Site Response

The house is positioned with a generous front setback, transforming the forecourt into a multifunctional outdoor living space. Rather than treating the front yard as residual land, it becomes an extension of the home—supporting movement, play, social interaction, and greenery. This gesture softens the boundary between street and dwelling and enhances the micro-climate through open air circulation.

The architectural massing is composed of clean rectilinear volumes, layered with balconies, planter ledges, and shading elements. These projections are not ornamental; they function as climate modifiers, reducing direct solar gain while creating intermediate spaces between inside and outside. The façade achieves a restrained modern expression, relying on proportion, shadow, and depth rather than excessive surface treatment.

Ground Floor: Public Life and Daily Function

The ground floor is planned as a semi-public domain, accommodating daily activities while maintaining privacy for upper living spaces. A covered car porch is seamlessly integrated into the building volume, ensuring weather protection without dominating the frontage.

Internally, the living room occupies a prominent position, benefiting from cross-ventilation and visual connection to the front yard. Its openness allows the space to function flexibly—as a family gathering area, a reception space, or a quiet retreat.

Adjacent to the living area, the kitchen and dining space is designed as the heart of the home. Its location allows efficient service access while remaining visually connected to the interior circulation spine. The inclusion of a maid room and well-planned service areas reflects a realistic understanding of contemporary household needs, ensuring operational efficiency without compromising the main living experience.

A centrally positioned staircase acts as both a functional connector and an architectural anchor. Its placement ensures clear circulation, intuitive movement, and structural rationality.

Upper Floor: Privacy, Rest, and Reflection

The upper floor transitions into a private and contemplative zone, carefully separated from the activities below. Bedrooms are arranged to maximize privacy while maintaining logical access to shared sanitary spaces.

The inclusion of a shrine room reflects cultural sensitivity, acknowledging spiritual practices as an integral part of domestic architecture. Its placement away from noisy zones allows quiet reflection, reinforcing the home’s emotional and symbolic dimension.

A verandah and balcony spaces introduce pause and openness into the upper level. These semi-outdoor spaces encourage natural ventilation, informal seating, and visual relief, ensuring that the upper floor does not become inward-looking despite its private nature.

Roof Level: Utility and Sustainability

The roof is designed as a functional service plane, accommodating a water tank and solar panels without disrupting the architectural composition. By clearly zoning utility elements, the roof remains orderly while supporting sustainable living practices. The use of solar energy reduces operational dependence, reinforcing long-term environmental responsibility.

Materiality and Environmental Performance

The building’s material palette emphasizes durability, thermal performance, and ease of maintenance. Deep window recesses, horizontal sunshades, and planter boxes act as passive climate controls, reducing heat gain while enhancing façade depth.

Natural light is carefully modulated—filtered rather than exposed—ensuring interior comfort throughout the day. Cross-ventilation is achieved through strategic openings on multiple façades, minimizing reliance on mechanical cooling.

Architectural Character

Architecturally, the house does not seek monumentality. Instead, it expresses quiet confidence, where proportion, function, and lived experience define its identity. The design demonstrates that a medium-scale residential building can achieve architectural richness through clarity of planning, respect for context, and thoughtful spatial sequencing.

This two-storey residence stands as a contemporary interpretation of urban family housing—practical yet poetic, grounded in everyday life while attentive to architectural integrity.
