Back in 2020 we were commissioned to come up with a conceptual proposal for the Marsa athletics track. A project where we could explore new ideas and make a difference to the environment we cherished so much, the track.

The design is a tribute to the dynamic nature of the sport and a consequence of the pedestrian flows and the links between spaces. It was up to the team to interpret these parameters to form an interactive and creative space.

What could have...would have . Unfortunately further ground investigation led us to deviate from this design to a more lean and efficient design. Nonetheless it does not take anything away from the value and effort the team put in.

Through my early work I have always looked at iconic stand out design , glorified it and embraced it. However through my career I have sought to find a style or better a thought process which allows contemporary architecture to merge with the surrounding context. Identifying elements rhythms and geometries that allow for a creative framework within the same rigid context, without producing an architecture fraud by copying but rather re-interpreting these elements in a creative way.

This project represented an opportunity to chase the balance between the rigid rhythm, modern form and client requirements. I feel this project is the closest I have personally come to merge the two aspects of design.

It is ever so rare that you find a mason that understands the details, the architect requirements and the work required to get things done 'skond is sengha u l-arti tal bini' .

First smooth project in years, not that we did not encounter problems but they were sorted out as a team.

I really hope we encounter more of these contractors going forward .
