STATUS: Awaiting Start of Works

CLIENT: Sliema Local Council

BRIEF Given the ever high demand of parking areas in the area of Sliema the local council approached our office for the creation of a car park within its locality. The site chosen for this project sits along the promenade with a difference in height between one street and another. Such a difference in height was the ideal site to create a volume that is partially underground and above ground at the same time.

This led for the roof of the car park at street and promenade level to be a public recreational space. The design of the car park was such that the volume to be infused within the natural context overlooking the bay. For this silicato rendering and stone cladding were chosen for the facades overlooking the sea. Together with mesh acting as apertures for natural ventilation. The ancillary structures at the promenade level were convinced as to be permeable volumes with aluminium framing and a mixture of opaque and transparent glass.

CLIENT: Kirkop Local Council

BRIEF What was once an open neglected public space for many years was always envisaged to become a prominent outdoor space experienced by the residents of the surrounding area. Partially funded by an EU grant of €800,000 the design sought to establish a pedestrian friendly zone linking the modest church square to the new misrah Zernieq. Apart from the creation of the open square, structural & infrastructural works were carried out due to the building of an underlying water reservoir and the building of roads & services surrounding the square. The layout of the square incorporates the creation of a central setting with shaded areas and a variation of trees & vegetation. Together with numerous passages, linking inside and central spaces within the square, this creating a sense of play associated with the vernacular urbanism street form of Kirkop.

BRIEF The Karwija catacombs are one of the few remaining catacombs in the airport area. The shelter was designed to protect the catacombs from the elements and create an interpretation centre were locals and tourists can learn about the history of the site. The design of the structure consists of a curved enclosure as to create an organic relationship with the context. The materiality of the structure evolves around a galvanised steel frame together with copper sheeting, PV panels, laminated glass panels and louvers acting as the skin to the curved design.

ACB Architects was responsible from the conceptual stage to the completion of this project.

BRIEF Xatt Tigne is located within a neighborhood that is frequented from locals and tourists alike within a context of commercial, entertainment & touristic amenities. This proposal puts forward the designing of a tourist information centre and a public convenience, which through its spatial organization pushes forward the notion of public use architecture. As the materials proposed for the spaces include a timber structure where the building is covered in vertical & horizontal vegetation, creating shaded areas for the uses. Together with a curved massing of the tourist information centre which complements the setting of the pedestrian accessible areas around the spaces.

STATUS: At Planning Stage

CLIENT: St. Julians Local Council

/

BRIEF This proposal is to embellish the area at Spinola Bay, St. Julians by the reorganization of the existing traffic flow and existing parking facilities, the provision of better public transport facilities in the area, the reduction of flooding by the provision of a water management strategy, ease pedestrian accessibility and promote social activity for both residents and non-residents alike. Apart from embellishing the area of Spinola and the provision of a public piazza in order to provide adequate space for social interaction for the residents and non-residents of St. Julians, another aim of the proposal is to reorganize the existing parking facilities in the area which presently tends to increase traffic congestions mainly during rush hours.
