Concrete does not reach its full design strength in 14 days.
Concrete gains strength through hydration, a chemical reaction between cement and water that continues for weeks. At 14 days, concrete may have gained much of its expected strength, but the standard reference age for specified compressive strength is normally 28 days.
Removing supports too early or applying heavy construction loads before adequate strength is confirmed can increase the risk of excessive deflection, cracking and structural problems.
Speed matters in construction, but structural safety matters more. Good contractors plan the programme around concrete strength development, proper curing and engineer-approved loading.
Build faster where possible. Never faster than the concrete allows.
