Living off-grid is not as simple as just buying a few solar panels and batteries. A properly designed systems includes several key components and the very first question you need to answer is - how big of a system do I need?

Off-grid home solar systems, also known as stand-alone solar power systems are not connected in any way to the grid and will need to be self sustaining. The solar system is responsible for catering to the electricity needs of your day to day life at home through various weather conditions and seasons including winter where the hours of available sun are few.

You need to make sure you properly size your system and calculate your needs carefully to help avoid being left in the dark at some point.

So you did your homework and are fairly sure that you know what to expect with the transition to off-grid living in Baja - GREAT!

But before you start buying solar panels, charge controllers, inverters, batteries and the like, a much more important and primary concern should be selecting exactly where you are going to create this off-grid lifestyle you've been dreaming about.

Where you choose to build may dramatically impact your power needs, water consumption, security and other off-grid living variables. Choosing the best piece of land to build on certainly deserves the time investment to evaluate things like:

• Climate in all 4 seasons
• How far do we feel comfortable being from services like grocery stores, doctors/pharmacies/hospitals, building supplies & neighbors in general?
• Topography - ease to get water- material onsite & build
• Municipal building permit requirements
• Does the property have a clean title?

We strongly recommend that you not only work with a licensed real estate professional but also make the small investment to confirm the property title validity with a well recommended attorney, experienced in local real estate.

This last point is especially important when considering the purchase of an off-grid property in remote areas down here that often do not have their titles recorded.
